Rally Chat Temporary Holiday Sites and Winter Rallies – Let’s Make It Happen!

But surely all you have to do is find a campsite or just some field that is already set up where the owner takes care of rubbish and that in his normal camping. Then someone on here just posts there will be a meet on this field on such and such date then if you want to go you pay the owner and pitch up as you would if you had just decided to go on your own, stay as long as you like it makes no difference, no one has to collect any money, you sort your own insurance just as if you had gone there on your own, I just can't see the slightest trouble.

That would be a simple meet not a rally.🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

The biggest problem might be, how do you govern how many nights one can stay.
If there is no limits, some of the full timers might decide it's a safe stable cheap community to base themselves and then join the club to take advantage?

I'm not saying that would be a problem but, so far, has not been mentioned.

Precisely what I would have posted but thought I would get accused of arguing, why the hell has it got to make a profit, just a simple idea where everyone pays their own camp fees and for their tow out of needed. Just find a suitable field, and advertise it on here and everyone makes their own arrangements, then everyone does their own thing, join in or not as the case maybe,
simples.
No committee just basic rules ,no one makes anything so no tax or other stuff to get into.
How can that get complicated.
My turn to be argumentative ;) at a basic level where the organiser has no risk or liability then you are right there is no need to make a profit, our rally at Shrewsbury Vintage for example everybody paid the showground and we had no costs to cover so very straightforward and no need for a slush fund.

In comparison we did a few New Year rallies at Shrewsbury and we had costs for room decoration, prizes, Bacon buns for 60+ Tea Coffee and of course a few bottles of Fizz and party poppers for midnight, this could have run in to a couple of hundred £ so needed to be covered and in doing so we aimed for a small profit (just to ensure there was not a loss) any profit just goes straight to charity.

So in conclusion, you as organiser have choice as to how complicated you want to make it.

I suspect all who run rallies keep a good set of accounts that are open to view on request. I believe we all also publish on the forum how much has been handed over to a charity. Certainly true of funflair, Jaws, Ambilkate and others. Please let's not start insinuating that organisers are doing it for personal gain because to my knowledge you are usually out of pocket and happy to be so if people have enjoyed themselves. People do it because they love Fun, and all it's members.

I'm not very good with attention span to read three pages, so forgive and just shoot me down!

A Funster meet in Wales, 9th - 16th October had to be cancelled, one post asked if anything else could be arranged!

I ventured the information that, on those dates, I would now be in a field near Brecon and would be happy for company.

Now this might fit this thread?

So on the 9th to 16th of October, I will be parked up on an Official Wild Camping field several miles south of Brecon!

Thats it arranged, unless somebody wants to be Secretary and start a thread and keep a register.

I will have a chat with the farmer next week but he's so laid back I can't see him worrying.

But it's as close to Wild Camping as you can get.

There are three area in use;

The large field. Grass, short cut on hard packed Earth. Pretty much all of it slopes gently down to the entry. I can be more difficult getting in, than out. If there is a lot of rain he closes the field.

The Copse of trees. Some room to drive smaller Motorhomes or PVC's into the trees, but it's mostly tents, cars with Tent Boxes, for the well hard who sling a hammock between the trees, or the really Hardy with just a Bivvy Bag. In strong wind period the Copse is closed.

The Small Field. Generally flattish, usually cut but unkempt rough grass. A hard-core track runs alongside this field, separating the Copse and this field. Its a bit of a slope up to the field and when you espy your 'spot' there are no formal pitches, you turn right and sprint across the grass until you want to stop or start to slither. This field is to the north of the Copse and is closed in high winds because of potential tree falls or flying debris.

That's it!

In the copse are five portaloos, I have witnessed people going in with their cassettes. They are well visited by campers but I've always had my own loo.

There are two fresh water taps with a good flow rate. They have a screw type fitting but bigger than the normal size, so connecting a hose is a no go, it's down to a degging can and funnel to fill your tank.

There are a number of firepits around the site, I think the rules are be sensible and you buy the fuel from the farmer.

It's not advertised but he does pick up and remove bagged rubbish BUT you are in the wilds so bagged rubbish left out overnight will probably be scattered by Dawn!

He or his son appear to have a bowser and noisy pump, he appears in the morning to suck the Portaloos dry and they give them a wash and brush up.

Unless you want to hire one of the Bell Tents, there is no booking! You roll up and pull on your hand break where you want or can. I've seen it busy but never full, the fields are that big. Weekends, Bank Holidays and nice weather especially in the School Holidays are Peak Time.

So just pull up and settle in, around 5.30pm he rolls around in a farm vehicle and collects £7.50 per person/night, and sells wood.

There is noise discipline but neither tightly enforced or broken.

Dogs are welcome but it is a Welsh farm, so must be kept under control.

There is nothing to do or there, except bask in the shadow of Pen y Fan.

Nearest shopping is Brecon 6 to 7 miles drive.
Nearest pub 3 to 4 miles.
The National Park Centre 2 to 3 miles, great meals.

All probably require a drive.

If you want to drive there is plenty within range for a day's entertainment.

I love it there, the peace, remoteness and views but know I'm probably in a small majority with that.

So I will be there those dates and that's all I initially offer.

SHOULD there be interest I could speak to the farmer about taking over the small field, 40ish units but that might move into organising and collecting deposits.

Small independent summer show fields may be an option where the event is held on a farmers field.
Two that spring to mind are Wolsingham show and Stanhope show.
There is usually water already on the field and a elsan point could be arranged like at chester food and drink festival.
That's a good idea as the show fields are used to what's involved in hiring out the field. I was at the North east regional DAs meeting at Stanhope a few weekends ago it was brilliant. Stanhope a lovely location and village. I did get talking to one of the DA's chairman and he told me the show ground owner could be very awkward. No rubbish removal would be considered etc.
I'm sure there's a few campsites where over flow fields have water elsan etc that can be hired.

The CL at Stoke Breurne has a rally field next door. I know that a wide variety of organisations use it. Right next to the canal, two pubs, one selling nice ice cream, a small museum and cafe.

Going there this weekend 🤪

So what’s stopping all of you who are suggesting all these fabulous sounding sites from asking owners for prices/details and starting your own rally?
For one thing Im not lucky enough to be retired, then there's the very honest fact that Im usually pretty crap at organising, I'll happily confess to being one of those thats happy to come along but someone else can organise it :-)

At least you’re honest about it😉👍

Isn't that why people join clubs?

Yes but last year it was reported, that the C&MHC had to close down one of their own site because some of the Travellers Community who were members, used the barrier code late at night, to let into the site, many other non members of the same Community and they, without paying, refused to leave.

The only way the C&MHC could get them evicted was to close the site.

Just thought I would mention it? 🤔
