Is it correct that when leaving the UK via Dover, Newhaven etc or any other ferry port, the British Passport / Customs control people will always ask you "are you carrying any cash" and "how much and in what currency"?

I have never been asked this question at an airport when flying out of the UK.

Is there a cash limit in UK Sterling that you can take out of the UK?

I can understand that anyone taking £100k for example in used notes onto the Dover - Calais ferry whilst going on holiday in their MH would raise some suspicions but surely, a grand (for example) in used cash would be allowed! Its your own money after all.

Has anyone been asked this question at the ports? If so, does anyone know what the cash limit is? Has anyone ever been searched either personally or had their MH spun over by customs when leaving the UK regarding how much cash you are carrying?

Many thanks,
Rick

PS........ no, im not planning anything untoward, just asking a genuine question as, come Spring time, im hoping to do my first run to France in my MH.

Never been asked. I thought all restrictions had been removed a long time ago.

no not since the 70s. I do remember the limit being £30 back then per person when going to Spain. Never been asked since.

Never been asked but seen it a few times on some of those afternoon "customs" programs.
The 10k limit sound right,,, No issue with taking a million AFAIK if you wanted but you need to show proof of funds and good reason.

I got stopped at the port of Santander , first off the boat then into a checkpoint that wanted to know how much cash I was carrying. I informed him about €200 euros he disappeared for about 15 mins got me to sign a paper that said I had €2000 and sent me on my way , no idea what that was all about as I was not searched and the documents where incorrect 🤷‍♂️

Ancient history I think. After all, if you have the right cards on you, you have your worldly financial wealth at your finger tips so if you had no cash on this side, you could be bathing in it on the other side as soon as you could find a cash machine or obliging bank.

I believe there is no limit but you are meant to declare if you are carrying more than £10k or equiv. I was once stopped by a customs motorcycle on a motorway in the centre of France, when I was travelling on my own. By got me to come off at next junction then asked me to confirm how much cash I had, which wouldn’t have been more than EUR200 and then they searched the car for cash. They were not interested in how much wine or anything else i had.

I remember that period very well. My genetics are north European, I had long fair hair back then and looked quite aryan with a bit of sun. The waiters and barmen thought I was German and were very nice to me until they heard my accent!

If stopped & searched in the UK i have seen the police immediately assume you are/must be a drug dealer.Same nonsense if found in possession of two mobile phones.
If so, does anyone know what the cash limit is?
As said it is over 10k declarable .I believe it is 10k euros when crossing borders in the EU , but in Spain you are allowed to be carrying 100k in cash without problems

Never leaving the UK but in 2015 my wife and I were stopped leaving Santander on a motorbike trip and asked how much cash we had by a Spanish customs officer. (Probably €200 or so)

Nothing to stop you taking as much as you want with you but if you have suitcases of the stuff somebody will start suspecting you of money laundering.

However if you delve deep enough on the UK gov.uk site travel pages you will find that the French (and I think others) can ask you to prove that you have the means to subsist in la belle France. I have never known anybody be asked the question let alone rejected for failing to satisfy them but the power is there. I suspect it will only be used if you turn up with pupils dilated and stinking of cannabis etc, or the like and far more likely to apply if you arrive by plane than if you are driving £50k plus MoHo!! But if you are relying on plastic best to have a link to your account to show you have "loads of money" just to be on the safe side.

As has been said already - £10k or more needs to be declared, but there are some finer points e.g. if you're travelling in a family group then the £10k is per group and not per person...

The full rules here if it's of interest to anyone.

I doubt it affects very many people though!

Last time I carried more than 10k across a border it was Italian Lire :D

That is because you were not being searched at the roadside.
they are armed ? So what ,they are there to shoot terrorists.

Your posted link does not state that. You can carry 10 k per person.,you just have to declare it.
