Hi all,

New to campervaning, recently purchased a van which has a thetford T2090 compressor fridge,

the Fridge does not cool, the compressor seems to make a gurgling noise, and there was a funny smell, may be ammonia,

I left it runninf for awhile and the compressor got quite warm at the top of the unit,

Presuming the fridge has a leak, is this repairable, could i get a new compressor and fit myself, or is it dead?

Thanks

It is probably repairable. What is the refrigerant? (should be written on the compressor or casing somewhere). Ammonia is R717.

R600a refrigerant
Yes easily repairable, if the compressor runs it's either stopped pumping or there's no gas in it.

If it's stopped pumping the evaporator won't frost very well, just mostly be condensation, the condenser will only be slightly warm. The fridge is scrap nowadays, we used to fit new compressors years ago but it's cheaper to buy a new fridge now.

If the gas has gone the evaporator won't get even slightly cold and the condenser won't get warm at all. Sometimes the compressor discharge pipe gets very hot which is probably air friction or something 🤔 it will just need a charging stub brazing in, a quick pressure test, vac and regas.

Thank you,

Seems to be pumping as I can hear a gurgling splashing noise when it is on,

The black unit at the back (not sure if this is the condensor) does get slightly warm

Is it really not worth replacing a compressor in an overpriced RV fridge? (Not that I'm suggesting particularly that this fridge needs a new compressor). I can see that in a £100 white box, but I'd have thought it might be worth doing in a £900 overpriced RV compressor. I guess it is the labour cost?

You may be right, would need looking into 👍

That could be the oil in the compressor or it could be the refrigerant going through the evaporator. 🤔 does the evaporator get slightly cold?

What happens when the comp stops pumping is the Reed valves become leaky or one breaks all together so the refrigerant still circulates but the back pressure will be high and that means the evaporating temperature is too high.

Anyway next step is to braze a charging stub into the compressor and connect some gauges... All will be revealed 😊
