I posted this a few years ago, but it seems relevant .........

A few years ago, while on a business trip to Houston, my colleagues and I took time out to visit NASA. We were chatting in a queue to get in, and there was a middle-aged couple behind us.

At one point the man said, “are you guys from England” We said “yes”. After a long pause he said, “Do you have mountains in England? … Yes. ……..and rivers? …. Yes ……. And big houses? …Yes. …….Another long pause … “Gee, you guys speak real good English!”

We chatted a bit more, and they were a lovely couple. They lived in the far North-West and were on a country-wide road trip in their RV.
 
America has a very poor education system. ...that's how trump got elected. Education is almost illegal in the US. Most never leave the country. They can't quite get there heads around Europe. But then it's no surprise really , their president thinks he's ended 10 wars in the last 6 months lol. And thanks America invented everything including the telephone, the light bulb and television. That's despite believing he's half Scottish.

We have temu trump here .....fartrage. ..and if he ever gets in the UK will be as bad as us of a holes soon 🤣

When my brother was serving in the Navy, he’d stopped at an American port and had shore leave. He ended up with an American woman, who promptly took him back to her flat. Brother told me that when he’d taken out his cash from his pockets and put it on the fireplace, the lady was amazed that England had its own currency and that we didn’t use American dollars 💵

Brother laughed and told her that some was English and some Canadian, whereby the lady was heard to say “what, even the Canadians have their own currency”
 
I've been asked if I knew Benny Hill in a bar, I was also asked if I knew Roger Daltrey by a pump attendant in Louisiana, so I said he was my nextdoor neighbour, he then started shouting to the workers in the garage "hay you guys this is Roger Daltreys nextdoor neighbor" I couldn't get out of there quick enough before they started asking for an autograph they got that excited.
 
Given the relative size of the USA vs the whole of Europe...

...and they have 50 States all with the same currency & stamps - I don't find it at all surprising that some less travelled just assume that the European Union would be similar.

In the same vein - approaching Heathrow from the US, invariably "why did the Queen build Windsor Castle under a flightpath"

But each State in the USA has it's own Legislature, laws, three levels of courts, taxes and driving and gun laws. So I consider that it is the Federal States of America not United.

A few years ago it was printed in our local newspaper about a taxi driver who picked up 2 American ladies from Edinburgh Airport. As he brought them into the city centre and along Princes Street he said to them 'if you look to your right ladies you'll see Edinburgh Castle to which one of the ladies said 'geez, that is beautiful' and the other lady said 'yes it is but imagine building a castle so near the shops'.:LOL:

When I was living in Bosnia two American tourists remarked about an ancient castle on the hill outside Zvornik “Why did they build it so close to the railway” duh
 
In Dallas there is a hut not far from where President John Kennedy was shot, which has been moved from the river crossing and is supposed t be the first building erected in what was to become Dallas.

I was told it was .very old - 1850 something, to which I remarked that is just over 30 years older than my London house. Met with shocked look. ;) :giggle:

As someone who we all think is slightly "right" of centre, I'm surprised that your post seems a little ambiguous regarding your feelings about Mr Trump

As his Mum was Scottish I would have thought you'd be delighted with the connection

As for trump , he has to be the thickest world leader there's ever been .. would be funny if he wasn't so dangerous.

The biggest economy in the world, leaders in technology, space, pharma and lots of other stuff that requires quite a bit of brain power and education.

You'd be surprised how many Brits don't have a passport, don't travel much beyond their town or local estates and are very badly educated. And, to be fair, US citizens don't need to - they have such a wide variety of landscapes and cultural variety within their own borders.

With a health secretary who doesn't believe in vaccination and is cancelling a lot of medical research. Yes there are some very bright people led by!!!!!!!

I didn't comment on the intelligence of the government. We know there isn't a lot of that in UK government either. My comment was that it's ridiculous to say 340 million people aren't very bright when you look at the things the USA have achieved in science and technology.
