We hired a Sunlight while checking out layouts and were quite impressed with the VFM. In the end, as we wanted a 7m approx length but with island bed and seperate toilet and shower rooms we went for the Dethleffs Globebus. Looking at the different models it seemed very much as the main difference between the Hymer version, the Dethleffs version and the Sunlight version was down to soft furnishing trim options, some veneer options and a few bells and whistles such as spice racks etc. Always worth checking out Alan Heath's YouTube channel to see if he has a video review (he's got over 300 on there!).

We have only ever seen 1 other Globebus near Mazarron an English couple had the T6, we have the T7 is that what you have

Thanks for the heads-up, @pappajohn -- Nica (the wife) actually holds a bus driver license here -- which enables her to drive non-articulated vehicles of any weight and number of passengers. We even have an official declaration (in spanish, but with all the official seals and stamps) stating exactly what her licence allows her to drive. But having said that, our idea is to have the bonus (ie, the added cargo capacity) but not the onus (having to worry about licenses, and specially not being able to rotate driving -- as Du the husband holds a common up-to-3500kg license).

In other words, if the 3500kg-capable motorhome is mechanically equal to the 3850kg-capable, the best of all possible words is to keep it with the 3500kg plaque but knowing that we could eventually load it up to 3850kg. Not a problem for our European trip as we will arrive with just two travel suitcases each, but once we're back in Chile, the MH will put on some weight with the stuff we're leaving here, and also additional stuff like more batteries, solar panels, etc.

Here in Chile, it's totally unheard-of for a motorhome to be pulled off the road and into truck scales to be weighted. Just out of curiosity, is that a common occurrence in Europe? We are thinking it probably is, or else why would the MH manufacturer offer a "just-change-the-plaque" €249 option for their already perfectly 3850kg-capable vehicles?

PS: your signature line actually got Du the husband laughing out loud uncontrollably here ;-)
VOSA, the governing body for all things vehicular in the UK, do pull motorhomes for weight checks but not often.
They mainly concentrate on goods vehicles.
Europe is not so strict as far as motorhomes are concerned.
If you are over your permitted weight you may get a caution, a fine or a prohibition.
A few kg over you will get a caution.
Quite a lot over you will be told to unload the excess weight (what you do with it is YOUR problem) and pay a fine.
A LOT over and they won't let you go, you Will go to court and pay a big fine and penalty points on your licence. (points won't apply to you)

In Europe, to drive a bus/coach you need yet another licence... Category D.
You cannot drive a bus on a truck licence or a truck on a bus licence..... Crazy, but its the law.

We were down in Mazarrón last week, but in our T7 - so it's a "Snap" as it looks like we're the same colour scheme! (apologies for thread highjack)

In regards to this question:

1) How is the thermal insulation on this unit? We rented a Dethleffs A5831 during a trip to Germany, and after overnighting in a parking spot in the Alps at -15 Celsius with no issues, we were really impressed with its cold weather performance. How does the Sunlight A72 compare?

Again i can only compare to our Carado A70, but it had very poor insulation. This was a 2011 model so maybe they have been improved and perhaps there's some difference to the Sunlight's but from what i see they are 99% the same construction and very very different to any Detlef's i've looked at. I always thought Carado and Sunlight came out of the same factory ? I can remember that some of the official paperwork for our Carado was in fact on Sunlight letterhead.

They actually are made on the same production line at the same time . You can see videos of the factory with couple of Sunlights then a couple Carado with just different trim and decals .
