Rally Stow Maries First World War Aerodrome - 2nd - 4th June

Good to go Dave? 🤞🤞
99% sure - we've got our quota (actually 22 paid in full) and the South Essex have 21 who have paid 50% - they dont usually ask for payment in full until a month before, its not particularly helpful but its their process and it works for them .......

i am 'in conversation' with them, and they recognise the dilemna. Their 'organisers' are long standing personal friends of mine and i trust them implicitly. For me, i wanted to have all the monies in prior to going away at weekend, just so its one less thing to have to think about.

i will pay the deposit by bank transfer over the next couple of weeks, i just need to go through the contract the aerodrome have sent through - SEC&C are just checking with their treasurer about what happens if some drop out and they have a 'shortfall' .....

we have asked them to open the gift shop on Tuesday, during the time the tours are running, which they have agreed to (again its staffed by volunteers, so they needed to ask)

i was amazed about how much they get in grants from Essex County Council etc ..... the princely sum of £0000 - we are small fry to be honest, they rent out the aerodrome for £10K per day usually, so this isnt a massive income for them, but if its successful in terms of fund raising they will have a 'skeleton' to build upon.

Good to go Dave? 🤞🤞
just had confirmation from the SE C&CC that if there is a shortfall, they WILL cover it ...... We have 23 paid and confirmed with one more who is paying asap but has had hospital appointments, so 24 in total from our side ...... all we need is an entertainments officer for the two evenings and ideas for informal 'brew ups' ...

so its a big YES from us and a big THANK YOU to all those who have expressed an interest in getting this off the ground .... (the perfect analogy ..... LOL) it IS happening!!

we go away tomorrow, so will have to wait until we're settled to start going through the contract properly

Dave and Yvette (how she puts up with my constant keyboard action, i will never know lol ....)

Deposit paid and booking confirmed

Paid the £50 just now for you. Forum Name as reference.

I must admit I'm not sure if the meal is happening or not?

Interested if the guided tour is happening but not bothered what time slot.

Cheers

Hi guys, the meal is no longer happening but we do have use of the mess both evenings.

Guided tours are happening (y)

Will be good to catch up with you both, it's been a long time since we've seen you.

it looks as though we have some form of entertainment on Mon and Tues night, quiz and games being organised by the 'Sharpies' - the South Essex for anyone who has watched the TV series 'Sharpe' - i dont know the exact details and of course no one has to join in .......

if anyone has any communal games or wants to put together a table game or quiz that each 'team/table' can do .........

if anyone fancies a communal bbq on the monday night, nothing formal, just bring and cook your own bbq and food on your own bbq and we can sit around the picnic benches, glass in one hand, gesticulating with the other whilst trying not to get splinters in your bum !!!!

just to let everyone know, there is no guarantee re tour times, but i will try to ensure you get the times requested ..

Only me. 🍽
can you send me your full name, reg number and contact tel number please - do it via private messaging ..?

for details re the Stow Maries Museum etc - please see the attached link

address is Hackmans Lane, Purleigh, Chelmsford, Essex, CM3 6RN - once you leave the A12 just follow your sat nav (or co pilot LOL) and eventually you will pick up the brown signs to the location.

we are all set for Tally Ho at 1400 hours NOT BEFORE - the access is via quite a long single track road, so if you arrive too early, you will be stuck there for some time. Please dont start to park up before 1330 hours just in case the volunteers who run the site need access, also they have a permanent resident, so please try to leave some sort of access for them to pass ......

i did suggest a bbq of some sort on the first evening, i think thats more likely to be a cook your own at your own van and then bring it over to eat together around 6pm, but its a very informal ad hoc thing, so wander over with a beer or wine and just mingle - i suggest around the wooden picnic benches at the rear of the airmans mess. we have access to the mess from 1900 until 1100 hours - there are some games and activities planned courtesy of the Sharpies, its been suggested to bring some £1 coins, poss around £5's worth each .....you might even win some of it back LOL!!

there will be a single water supply on site, so if you can arrive with enough water for the two nights, that will be helpful,
grey waste and black waste will be pointed out to you along with general waste. There is NO EHU available but if you desperately need it for a medical emergency, we will be able to sort something out

as its a working aerodrome and aircraft can technically land in an emergency (no flights are planned during our visit i believe) its important that the actual runway is free from debris, rubbish etc, but DO NOT just wander over to collect anything please, contact me immediately and i will pass it the site representative. All dogs to be kept on a leash AT ALL TIMES, there is a dog exercise area/walk but there are lots of wildlife and we dont want any dogs chasing anything and ending up on the runway

i have tried to allocate tour spaces as per requests, but as those tours are hosted purely by volunteers, that may change. i will however post a list of names and times on here and put a hard copy in the airmans mess on monday evening, the provisional list is

I'm so good he named me twice :ROFLMAO:

Sorry to be a pain. We were originally down for the tour at 10.30. We are now listed for 12. We cannot do that, Ian needs to eat at 12.30. If 10.30 not possible 13.30 would be ok.

No problems, I've shifted you to 1030, but we are very much dependent on the tour times being as I think they are BUT if things change and you find yourself on a tour time that isn't suitable contact me straight away and I'll change it for you !!

In the words of Bob Dylan,

'Oh, the times they are a changing ......'

The aerodrome want tours to start at 1000 and then at 30 minute intervals from that point. They suggested that people just turn up and wait in the mess hall, however that could mean a 2 hour wait, so I have suggested we continue as we have by allocating spaces on each tour at a maximum of 16 people per tour (which might change if they think it's too many)

I will post later with revised times for everyone when I've had chance to work it all out .....

Everyone going to Stow Maries will get a tour if they turn up at their allocated time ....😁
This is going to be a challenge, getting out of my pit before the sun reaches the yard arm three days in a row - 1st to leave Thorpe-le-Soken, 2nd the tour, 3rd being kicked off Stow Marie. So much for the restful layabout motorhoming lifestyle :snooze:

Revised Tour Times - please let me know if the new timings are not suitable due to medical or other specific reasons - YOU MUST BE AT THE AIRMANS MESS NO LATER THAN 15 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED TIME ,,,,,,this might seem a bit early but we need to make sure that we are ready to start the tour on time - our guides are unpaid volunteers, so even if theyre not punctual, lets make sure that we are and ready to go on time, thanks

A quick reminder, no access to the site before 1400hrs tomorrow, though you can start parking along the lane from around 1330hrs bring your own glass and enough alcohol (or non alcoholic drinks) and snacks for the two nights, 1900 - 2300 hrs each evening.
Bring at least £5 in pound coins (or change) for each person, to take part in the games planned.
A pen or pencil is probably going to be needed for some of the activities
There are NO shops within walking distance, there is one pub, but it's a good 40 mins walk through the fields

If anyone currently at Thorpe needs directions to the supermarkets close to us, to stick up on supplies, a quick Google will show you where they are or just ask. There's Lidls Morrisons (no LPG) Tesco and Asda aswell as a M&S food hall.

That's all for now, folks ....

Tally Ho

See you all @1400hrs !!
