Hopefully a simple question.

I have an old but nice sounding rechargeable and mains DAB radio I want to use in bedroom (RV).

It needs 15V DC 2.4Amps in and I intend to cut off charger plug (or buy a match) and use a step up converter from a 12V car type socket.

Most recommended metal body units are 5Amp. Would this hurt/damage a device only wanting 2.4A?

Should be fine as the radio will only draw the power it needs, not the full 5Amps the step-up can supply.

The key thing is the voltage! If you supply more voltage than the radio is designed for then you'll release the radio smoke. As long as the current rating of the step-up matches or exceeds the radio spec ( and the voltage is the same as the radio expects) then you're good.

.......... or blow it up !!! :ROFLMAO:
No it will not. If there is insufficient DC power for the rail, it will not work or possibly make a strange sound. It may even cut off as you turn to volume up and the amplifier stage can't cope. Putting to little voltage in can't hurt.

Do male sure it is DC and not AC out of the power pack though. Not all are.

I would use something a bit bigger. There may be a start up surge which could sag a power supply which is marginal. I would look for a 7.5 amp buck boost supply on, say, amazon. If it ends up that it won't start it, don't panic. There are some other work arounds. Critical is the voltage. It will take of try to take the current it wants!

That is exactly what I did with my sub £100 LG HDTV which wants 19v. Perfect cost effective and user friendly solution.

Yes, of course, I confused the voltages being supplied.

Not sure where the ac would come from unless you bought an inverter and then reduced it with a transformer.

Not using power pack. Cutting plug off that fits radio already (2 wires) and grafting that on to a socket wired to the step up module that provides 15V 3A from an existing 12V feed.
