Hi everyone

Just a little heads up for you lovely lot.
I sold my motorhome a couple of days ago and just went to cancel my paid up insurance policy for the year with Stavely Head, and was informed if the policy has run over 7 months im not entitled to any refund. Apparently it's in the small print but unfortunately I missed that. I really think this is out of order as it works out they owe me over £100.
Just be aware, they have been a useless company. Rant over lol.

Cheers

Most insurance companies make the rules up to suit them selves i sold a saab co verable and moved down tp a nissan note and the insurance company refused to transfer so had to cacell and take out a new policywhich turned out to be with the same underwritter

I'm afraid it is quite a common tactic.

I think almost all insurance companies have cancellation fees and clauses, most of which can wipe out most of any refund.
As you say it's in the small print (y)

Robbing gits.

If you cancelled motorhomefun, Jim wouldn’t be expected to refund anything why should the insurance company

Insurance is a charge for time on risk , no time no risk ? NFU dont have any problem with stopping and starting , or policy cover changes etc . Its another example of "cheap isnt always best "

Not really - you bought & paid for an annual policy so why should they make a refund?

If you go to a pub, buy a pint then leave half of it - should the landlord give you half of your money back?

I agree, insurers have a cancellation policy and by taking out the insurance, you have agreed to it - always read the small print

If I had payed monthly though I would of been better off, a simple small admin fee for cancelling and I'd of had my money still in my pocket.

was going to post the same but thought you have heard enough of me banging on about nfu, but yes it is true i have always got a refund or the difference taken off the new policy.
just one example of service more than cheap.

When I cancelled my motorbike insurance, I was informed that there would not be any refund and also I had to pay a £25 Fee for a change to the policy, I told them to let it run out them, "cannot do that as you have now told us that you have sold it" I wrote and told them (always write/email when in dispute with an insurance company, anything on the phone can and will be denied) I would report them to the insurance ombudsman, and was then told the fee would be waved as a gesture of goodwill. If an insurance company is reported to the ombudsman they have to pay to have the claim investigated, even if they are correct and win. It'a a useful tool to have.

Ha ha I got that same spiel from Hastings direct a couple of years ago with my car insurance. They wanted me to pay a cancellation fee for a policy I had paid in full but still had 3 months to run.

They finally gave in and waved the fee when I informed them i had 2 other policies with them one with 10 months remaining and one with 9 months remaining both of which would also be cancelled if they persisted to try and charge me for a fully paid policy.

They gave me the same story about not letting it run because I had sold the vehicle

In the end they actually gave me a refund of £17 to keep my custom

It pays to argue with them it seems.

Insurance has always been a minefield

Not necessarily ... When I needed insurance for my FamilyScout which was up for renewal on 9 May I had to do a lot of ringing around as I was going to be selling it once the warranty work had been completed at the end of May, therefore every company I rang I was completely upfront about my intention to cancel it, hopefully within 3 months. I checked all of the cancellation fees, not only those of the broker, but also of the underwriter and they varied quite a bit ... one bit of excellent advice I was given was NOT to pay for it via Direct Debit, the reason being that this is a credit agreement (ie loan) and therefore when you cancel the policy the broker charges the standard admin fee for themselves as you'd expect BUT the underwriter could also charge an additional 3 months of premiums so it would end up being an expensive mistake.

The one I eventually bought from Motorhome Direct (aka A-Plan) came out best for the basic cover I wanted and low cancellation charges (policy paid for in full when taken out), and they were even better than I expected as they said they would waive their broker cancellation fee because I'd been honest about it from the start, saving £30! I should therefore get a pro-rata refund for the months I won't be using less a £25 charge by the underwriter.

... must remember to ring them tomorrow and cancel it! :D

I think there attitude is - they and you entered into a "one year" contract. They are willing to meet their contractual obligations. Why should they refund!!!

My attitude is "robbing bastards"

We were change £40 to transfer a no claims bonus after cancelling one policy and re-insuring on another. The policy only had a couple of weeks to run!

They were both with the same company!!!!!

Camping and Caravanning club were good to deal with when I changed vans. Received a refund less admin fee no problem. Now with NFU who are very helpful and fully explain every thing including refund entitlement.

i was insured with the c&mc they wanted to charge me £25.00 to cancel my insurance and no refund so i told them ok just leave it they then told me its illegal to have insurance on a vehicle you dont own after a heated rant enquiring if there parents were married they cancelled the insurance for no charge pagey 1 ins 0

You have shot yourself in the foot.
Before i took out my Insurance with them last year i answered all their questions. I agreed a premium, they sent me an email with the wrong details of my van. The said it was 2 litre, i never at any stage told them it was 2 litre.
They wanted £25 to amend.
I told them it was their fault as i had answered all their questions. I also explained that their new premium wouldn't have won my business.
They were not for moving.

I told them i was a Member of MHF and i'm sure the 50,000 members and 250,000 readers would be interested in the treatment i received.

We will waive the £25 this time was their reply.

Get back on and fight your corner.

Insurance companies tend to ask if you are a member of any clubs and I always say Motorhome Fun and if they haven't heard of it I educate them ... doesn't do any harm!

Not just allows them to keep the premium, When I cancelled a bike insurance they wanted a £100 adnmin fee to cancel the two months outstanding policy. As it is illegal to keep a policy live on a vehicle you no longer own??????????????? the yearly premium was only £75. I left it going and did not stay with them ever again.

I guess it's taught me a lesson tbh, I'd rather share my mistake and let everyone on here learn from it including me lol. I just know not to use them again when i upgrade and get my new van. "I must read the small print" (I MUST READ THE SMALL PRINT) lol.
