Hi, can i connect the charger to the battery without disconnecting the terminals or is it unwise in case i short something out, the last time i charged it the tracker firm phoned to ask if all was well as i had disconnected it so i had to keep my eye on it as no tracker? also would it be better to trickle it or fast charge, don't have a multimeter so can only go off the charger dial re voltage .

What Van and age?

Neg off first
Positive on first

if you are not going to remove the battery ( and you dont need to ) dont connect directly to the battery terminals but to the designated points under the bonnet. if its a FIAT then to the nearside front of the slam panel there is a stud for the eart terminal and further back on the left side of the fuse box plastic cover there is a lift flap for the positive connection.

slow charge if you have the time.

Leave it on. The alternator charges it while it's on so why not ??

Personally I leave the battery on, charged the MoHo leisure and starter battery yesterday, one of my vans and have a car on trickle charge via a Solar panel.

I think the concern is causing a 'spike' that may damage an ECU however don't switch the charger on until the clips are on the battery, and in commercial situation often a battery is used to smooth a power circuit out (UPS) .
