Hi, I'm in trouble again.
I thought I had disconnected my starter battery, but I forgot.
Checked the voltage and it's reading 5.7 volts.
so I have a digital battery charger but when I put it on, it thinks that its a 6 volt battery and will only go into 6 volt mode.

According to the charger instructions the battery needs to be above 7.2 volts for the charger to recognize it as a 12 volt.

Any ideas on how to proceed from here

I have had some success in the past by using a simple battery charger, basically just a transformer and a metal rectifier. I have one which I inherited that is 60 years old, maximum charge 5A but it will raise the voltage enough for an intelligent charger to recognise the battery. However if its that flat the battery is knackered (technical term) and will need replacing asap.

I have a very old charger for this situation.
Only suggestion for you is jump leads to get the battery up.to.the point where the smart charger will.work. it will take longer than you.think as the smart charger keeps stopping the charge to check all is well.

As Klaatu said.
But if you want to try charging it try connecting a 9v PP3 battery across the terminals then quickly connect the charger.
Only takes the charger a few minutes to get the battery voltage above 6v
That'll give the charger the voltage it needs though disconnect the PP3 as soon as possible.
don't hold your breath expecting it to be ok.

Update
I connected a spare battery to the flat battery overnight and it seems to have brought up the voltage so that the charger is seeing it as a 12 volt battery.
I have it charging now for the last few hours....fingers crossed

I had the same issue with my battery.Seems a drop in temperature can damage batterys.I replaced mine with a Bosch battery.

Can't remember ;)
let your smart charger charge for 25 hrs at 6 v then you will be able to charge as normal on a 12 v charge
