As we are passing through I have booked to stay at the C&CC site near St Neots., wed/ thursday next week.
For a couple of days, apart from the riverside walk are there unmissables that we shouldnt miss?

Hi.
RAF. Duxford museum. Trip along to Newmarket,if you are about early, the horses USED... to come up through some trees, cross the ( OLD ) main road then,to Bury St Ed's and out onto the gallops, for me,it was the sight and sounds of the horses while they trained. 20 miles.away .go Punting on the Cam at Cambridge.Enjoy.

I drove past without stopping - just because of my itinerary. I’ve nothing against the place - but Mattyjwr could have some tips for that area.

Mike & AnThe itinerary I mentioned was our recent stay at Houghton on the NT campsite.

How far do you go on your day trips.
The Manor, Hemmingdord Grey is a very interesting Historic House
Our guide was the owner.

As Podney says. If you're interested in WW2 events, there is a small museum near Tempsford celebrating the activities of SOE types who flew from there to occupied Europe.

The campsite at St Neots is in a reasonably pretty area and close to the town centre but IMHO, it is a prettyish base but the town itself doesn't have much to write home about beyond the market square and river.

Cambridge is well worth a visit.
Huntingdon has the Oliver Cromwell museum

Thanks all, we wil only have one day to use up, depending on the weather.
Whilst SOE etc is definitelty of interest I think Hemingford Grey might win the day.
Thanks again, if you ever come to the Cotswolds give me a shout

Our visit was very interesting. Quite different to a NT house visit.
Call the # at the link to get a visit slot.
900 year house.
Don’t want to take away too many surprises but the history is huge compared to the outside first impression 😆

Edit: and the riverside village with church is nice. We can recommend village pub The Cock. Two great local ales or cocktails, etc..

Thank you so much for telling us about The Manor at Hemingford grey PE28 9BN. A bit difficult to find until you look for nonancourt (lane?) You do have to make an appointment for the house visit but then you get to hear all the stories and the biggest wind up gramophone you ever saw!
A really interesting visit and such detailed tapestry work. We had a bit of sunshine at the end and the gardens were also very interesting
Thanks again

theres also a mill at houton just up the road from hemingford grey not sure if its open all the time nice walk across the meadows

Has anybody been fishing at the St Neots CCC site? I’m trying to find some details from CCC but no joy. I understand fishing is on the adjacent river but nobody seems to know rules, costs, types of fish etc. Also of interest is accessibility as I have restricted mobility.

Shuttleworth at Biggleswade have a lot on, and some very cheap concerts some nights. There's also Stotfold Mill, a short drive away.nIn St Neots itself there is a lovely little Cineworld cinema and if you're looking for a takeaway, Mexica in St Neots is delish!!!!

We are on the site at the moment and there are some details of the fishing in the Information room. I will try and find out and let you know.
DavidT (who is not a fisherman)

rls106 I have taken pictures of the information but unable to post it (bad wi-fi or my computer skills are useless).

Fishing is for campers only and purchase day tickets from the Reception (prior to fishing). No fishing between 9pm & 6am.
You must have the correct rod licence(s). Cost is £3 per adult for the fishing.

The river Great Ouse passes by the site and there is a public footpath between it and the campsite.

No idea of the fish or what problems with mobility. I will try and have a look tomorrow before we leave.

DavidT who is still not a fisherman and is going to find out how to add photos :giggle:

When you want to add photos to your post just touch the attach files button with the paper clip on and then it asks you to choose with a drop down list click on photo library and choose photo and add😊

Thank you Speve .. I have tried that and get the photos but when I try to attach them I go straight back to the threads list. I am using an iPhone so I will blame it on that😄

Access to river bank has always been good when we ha been there photo taken about 4 years ago

Chris

If you walk out of the site and turn immediately right and walk along the right of way that runs parallel with the site, you come out into a wide open expanse of heathland and footpaths. There is a small boatyard upriver from the site that can be reached by walking across this open space. Last year they had day boats with outboards for hire, l think around £50 for two hours.

Thank you to everybody who has responded to my post. The pictures supplied are fantastic. Great help - far more than I could find on line and even from CCC.
I am very grateful for the help.

If you walk towards river and turn left you can follow the river up stream to the Mill pub, not been in since covid but always looks busy.
Motor boat hire near pub.
