I had an auto electrician to look at why my leisure battery wasn't not charging when driving and he called the Hymer split charge relay "primitive" and whether he knew how to fix it or not - he didn't.

I then had an ex Brownhills guy out - very good - fettled off a few little irritating jobs for very reasonable costs and I was pleased. Very familiar with the Hymer split relay charge and the D-link thing that he pointed out and sorted it and it works.

Fast forward to a month or so later whilst looking at / thinking about my one battery situation - which I'm comfortable with - I suddenly wondered what's stopping my "primitive" eh - its 26 years old :rolleyes: - split charge relay from over charging the leisure battery via the alternator.

I'm guessing nothing and perhaps I have to be mindful of its connection ?

Any comments appreciated.

many many years! since I was a kid
it may be primitive compared to more modern systems, but is as simple to fix as any basic relay. It should not overcharge as the alternator will only charge at a few amps and sense the battery voltage rising the same as the vehicle battery. don't expect it to recharge a flat battery in a couple of hours though

Thank you - that's what I needed to here. The mention of the starter battery working in the same way is now quite obvious now you have said that …...Dooh :D. Thanks !!

And if your Brownhills friend couldn't fix a simple split charge system I wouldn't trust him with anything more complicated... Like connecting a solar panel or a second battery.

Hi PJ - no the brownhills man was good - restored my faith after being robbed by the caravan man in Sheffield.

The auto electrician was just that an auto electician but supposedly a good one - hey ho

Nothing wrong with primitive systems if they work. It's when the technicians reinvent the wheel that the fun starts. Look how electronics have taken over in the automobile industry, an engine will not even run without the computer saying yes to a multitude of tests. Classic example was the Boeing plane that crashed the computer thought it knew better than the pilot and flew the plane into the ground. KISS always works. The other one of course is " If it works don't fix it "

On the other hand there's another classic example, of the auto-driver software that detected the cyclist pushing her bike across the road 6 seconds before impact, activated the emergency stop 1.5 seconds before impact, but it had been disabled so ran into her at full speed.
