One we found that isn’t in there is Lac du Der, which has multiple swimming beaches and other spots. There are three CCP aires and several freebie locations on the opposite shoreline.

We plan many of our trips around this series of books. Great swim spots, and often great places to stopover!

We each use our motorhome/other vehicle and other camping equipment to suit ourselves - so I am not knocking anyone even though I may think oh how peculiar I don't find any need to belittle or question how they spend their time and money.

I just like seeing other places whether in the UK or abroad. Easier when we could and did both walk miles and frankly if there were only aires where we were packed like sardines and could always see into other people's vans - we'd never have stayed on one again - and neither would anyone else. Fact is - they are hardly ever like that - and in any case have never been the focal point of our holidays, we go the that place so we can see whatever, then rest our heads in our van there overnight.

We've deliberately bought equipment so that we are not constantly reliant on EHU since it's not unusual to find where we like to go, only having 10A available - sometimes less. Hence, best to be as self sufficient as possible really.

Lac du Der is the British misnomer of the correct name and by which the angling community have very long known it. It's far vaster than blooming huge and more reminiscent of standing on a beach staring at a flat calm sea rather than of a normal sized lake shore where 99/100 you can see the other bank or at least a structure upon it!

I have a two day journey to get to the channel

UK is small. I come from the lakes and it was never more than a day to get to Dover, even in my old Bedford CF with its (yes I put it in) 30hp BMC non turbo 1.8 pushrod diesel with top speed of 55mph. It’s only traffic jams that slow you down.

North of Scotland is fabulous. The decision was always either North to the highlands (a week or shorter) or over the channel (a couple weeks or more).

If one likes their comforts, TV, hairdryers, microwaves etc it’s easy enough these days to prep a van so it doesn’t need EHU.

No it isn’t a windup
It’s not cheaper for me by the time I travel 450 plus miles to the channel takes me two days
pay for an overnight stop on route ( need EHU and a shower )
cross on the train or even ferry at a time that suits me - refuse to go at stupid o’clock hours just because it’s cheaper
Pay for travel insurance and break down cover which isn’t cheap for two weeks
Add wear and tear
Don’t do free Aires where your often packed like sardines with no electricity - not a chance prefer sites with facilities
occasionally use CCP but only the camping Mon as your guaranteed EHU and showers
Don’t drink wine ever - cannot stand the stuff
Premium beer and spirits is no cheaper neither are cigs

I can do Yorkshire , Lakes or Northumberland or even the Highlands in 2-2.5 hours or less
Stay on a proper campsite either C&CC or CAMC for 14 nights at £35-40 approx a night (£490 -560)
£80-90 worth of diesel to go there and back to home ( cheaper than burning dozens of gallons to get to Central France )
Food cost don’t come into it - you have to eat
NO travel insurance costs
NO ferry or tunnel costs



Might be cheaper if you live in Engerland closer to channel ports , travel at cheaper times (usually stupid o’clock )
Do without EHU ( I won’t)
Spend your time on free Aires often very crammed in popular places ( Not for us )





(Who mentioned roads in Spain I didn't !! Roads in Spain are generally good and motorways are cheaper tolls or free )

And get pi—ed wet through and probably very little sunshine, no thanks.

Why are you bitching about the tunnel cost then if you are so happy in the UK & it sounds like you hate France so why go, it don't add up.
I don't understand the need for EHU & showers when you have a decent van if you have the Pilote in your profile.
A Nationwide Flex Plus account would give you Breakdown Cover & Travel Insurance for as many trips as you want in a year for £13/month (£156/year).Think some folk are not happy unless they are moaning..

But some people need a bed for 4 hours on a ferry..can't get up in a morning and just like moaning and complaining.Must be very very old.BUSBY.

Just looked now..For my van on that date the early crossing for my van is £137 which is £38 cheaper than yours..BUSBY.

and Eurotunnel cost a fortune £478 returns last two weeks in July add that £100 + pounds of diesel to get to the channel
Add travel and breakdown insurance not so cheap then

You can get a ferry for £90 - £180 return. Also the joy, excitement and wonder of exploring different countries and cultures - easily worth the price.

Nationwide account - just open one. Only takes a few minutes. Good insurance - AA and Aviva.

Sounds like you need a 5* hotel (Although internet and TV is easily done anywhere off grid.)

Yes. Up to 7.5 ton and any length in UK (AA) Up to 7.5 ton and 8 metres in EU. I don't think there is a restriction on days as far as I am aware.

We are going over in August (school holidays for us) and even then the total holiday cost will work out cheaper than being in the UK...we will almost certainly have lovely weather and the roads are absolutely better than ours! I drove into Paris on a Sunday two years ago and even that wasn't stressful... and it was my first time driving there in the motorhome.
Sites...or stopovers were a mix of free and more expensive ones with a pool to accommodate our son but this time I want to try lake swimming so looking for ideas.
I really don't like motorhoming in the UK as the traffic is horrendous.
Bring on August!!

For lake swimming I can reccomend Camping de L'etang Fouche which is a Huttopia site in Arnay-le-Duc near Djon. Far enough south for good weather but driveable in a day from Calais and the lake swimming is great.

We stayed at Huttopia Paris two years ago...it was a lovely site! Will definitely look at your recommendation. We are hoping to get to Chenas by the 17th.

It’s not just Les Rosbifs that refer to it as Lac du Der though:

Chantecoq, along with Nuisement and Champaubert were villages submerged when the reservoir was created.

Grasmere9 if you do visit I would rate the three CCP aires in order of preference as:

Giffaumont-Champaubert: Station Nautique. Central to the activities, restaurants and family beaches.

5km west near the bird observatory. More remote and quiet but easy access to the shore and the cycle path that circles the reservoir - 26km IIRC.

Giffaumont - Champaubert: Casino. Quite tightly laid out and adjacent to the public parking for the casino complex and other attractions.

We saw some great parking spots on the northern shore when we cycled around, including one adjacent to a water sports centre at Sainte-Marie-du-Lac-Nuisment, where they had one of those huge inflatable setups on the lake. And further east from there a relaxed park up in a woodland setting at Éclaron-Braucourt-Sainte-Livière (Plage de la Cornée du Der. All on P4N and S4S.
