So I bought some Solar,
then this autumn in the frozen Northlands, realised that there's more wind than solar in UK. Certainly in the northern territories where I love to go.

So I've been gogling at thebay for Wind Power. Turns out there are many many options startin from about undred nicker. 800w seems to be a common output.

I could get 500w wind turbine for 150 squids.

Anyone any thoughts or experience ?

SunStore told me I couldn't put different PV inputs to the same cable/system/controller coz they're all different electricity. I would have to have separate controllers for each PV, each feeding direct to Battery. So multiple cable runs etc etc.

I guess it would be even more of a problem with wind, coz some of these units apparently generate A/C to controller which must convert it to DC.
But it seems worth persevering - I could have been generating max output most of the time - without worrying about clouds or angle of the panel or any of that nonsense.

I wish I'd known what a minefield MH are before I gotted borns

Am a hiting ma hedd agenst a brek warl ?

over to you lot !

I would say be careful where you mount the wind turbine as I have read that they are noisy and will resonate through the van if attached.

Solar, if the panels are the same spec they can go into one controller and then into the batteries, if they are all completely different voltage spec then yes they should each have their own controller.

Where would you store the ‘propeller’ blades……and how would you secure the turbine mast……?

Ok
thanks Martin

I only need this power when off grid - so turbine would be a distance from van

but how would I know what is same spec (this applies to wind also I guess) what characteristics / statistics should I be asking for ?

they would be dismantled in the van 'garage'.

only need this power when parked up for a number of days.

nd how would you secure the turbine mast…
probably use some sandbag scenario like they do with motorway signs . . . .

or attach it to someone else's van ?

or a nearby fencepost

CTEC do a controller for solar and wind inputs combined.

With the solar just the voltage as far as I know, the wind I would keep separate but possibly just because I am like that;) and to be honest it's not something I have looked into.

Something like this could work, comes with dedicated controller electric stop no dump load needed. You will need a versatile mast with ability to anchor it well. Needs to be well away from the van as it’s noisy and it will smash onto van if let’s loose. I have one on the garage gable wall, clamped on a Scafold tube. It does outside lighting coupled with a solar panel.
Be prepared to be disappointed, but, it’s fun playing up with different alternatives.

Every time I looked at this back in the day I got comments and research told me it was too noisy and not enough output.
I then spoek to folk who I seen when I was wilding ant they had them who said simialr but use it as they had bought it.

Good luck with tryng though, let us know how you get on

I was under the impression that solar panels just needed light to generate energy. But sunlight generates more.

the wind thing works well at charging batteries on a boat mainly at sea not sure how you would mount it to a motorhome.
there quite noisy closeup. Ideal when going very very long distances across oceans .

The noise is variable, when winds in excess of 5m/s you will certainly hear it from inside the van. Some noise after it gets going, is covered by the wind. Anything is attached to, will amplify the hum. I have seen max 170w out of a so called 400w, at 1,2m diameter. Any bigger you will not restrain it on a portable mast.

Loads of the raggies (who naturally have wind obsession) in the marina have wind turbines of various designs and they all make a racket as well as the other noise the halyards make which strangely I can sleep through. There are 3 near me the owners of which rarely visit so I pop a bungee on them at night so we can sleep and remove them in the morning. Would not be popular on a campsite but fine if a distance from people I guess.

Not many sites where you can get clear enough wind to make it viable. They don't even kick much out when on a yacht out on a relatively exposed mooring.

Consider hinges on your existing solar panel. The output goes up a lot when tilted south.
Wind power is too much faffing about when you're supposed to be on holiday IMO

Thanks for input folks

( guess what happens if you tell me not to ? )

My existing solar is a folding portable 120w, so i try to keep it facing the sun. (Except when I get worried the wind will take it away - then I lay it flat on the ground).

When it gets full sunshine, the numbers on the controller go wild. But in the far North of Scotland October 2021, full sun was rare.

I have noticed ebay has 2 designs of wind turbine. There are vertical axis as well as the traditional horizontal. Dont know if noise is same from both, but blades of vertical type will have to return AGAINST the wind to get to start point and full of wind again.

I have pretty much decided to try out the wind option, just a process of figuring out the practicalities of how, which to get etc
