Had a proper look at what we've got. Got a 500w inverter, a calcium leisure battery which we think is on its way out. Thinking of changing for a 3000w inverter and 300 solar. What size leisure battery would you suggest
I'm so flipping confused I seem to be going round in circles.

I've got a 3000w inverter along with a fogstar 608ah and 300w solar/B2B charger. Plenty of power. We do full time in the van though so I guess it's down to how much you need.

Ignoring inefficiency of the 3000W inverter, at full power it will be drawing some 250A from your battery(s). Realistically you need lithium and most can discharge at that rate (but their BMS - management system may trip if you try more than 250A), check the specs. You'll need multiple other battery types to do that current.

But, what are you using to need 3000W? Do you really use all that? If you do, really consider how long you are running at that load. After all 3000W = 250A, = 250 Amp per hour, I.e your 250Ah battery is empty after an hour. Even with a much larger say 460Ah battery, if you use most of it's capacity, can you recharge it?

Whilst a 3000W inverter isn't necessarily excessive, I wouldnt run it on 12V. Ill be keeping my amperage below 100A.

Work out your daily use in watts. Multiply by three. Divide by system voltage and that gives you the storage you need at that voltage.

Eg 1000W (per day) x 3 / 12V = 250Ah
2000W (per day) x 3 / 24V = 250Ah
3000W (per day) x 3 / 48 = 187.50Ah

To see the system amperage:
W = V * A
W / V = A

1000 / 12 = 83.33A
2000 / 12 = 166.67A
3000 / 12 = 250A

I agree with that which I've read in several places; run on amperage < 100A.

I don't know the mathematics of it all, but I do know that we can run our microwave and kettle at the same time using a 300w inverter and 300Ah Fogstar lithium, and being mainly all electric can last around 4 days with no solar or top up via the alternator.

Do you need 3000w inverter? Our 1500W powers microwave, TV, Hairdryer, Amazon speaker.......... Not all at the same time

Our low power microwave(600W) still has a peak demand of 1KW and pulls 87Amps. It pays not to be too ambitious with a 12V system. I wouldn't want more than our 1500W Inverter making our lithium batteries start breathing too heavily.

I will ask the same question... Do you need 3000w ?? what will you be running ??

Mine is only 1100w running off 2 x 100amp lithiums. It runs a small microwave (Daewoo qt1 rated 1000w input) air fryer and the wifes hair dryer.
Works fine for us..

I would say 3000w is ott for most,we have a Renogy 2000w inverter,happily runs air fryer (1450w) oven type,850w microwave,kettle,240v fridge freezer.Solar as much as I can fit( for duller days) min 300ah lipo.(we have 320 ah under each front seat,640w solar + 200w folding,100a mains charger 50a (Renogy) DC/DC/Mppt,never been on hook up in 2yrs.

What inverter, Paul? I'm looking at these things now and the drop from a VA number to watts for many appliances, then a further drop with temperature, add up ☹️.

Eco Worthy (or DC House) are as cheap as you can go and still have some kind of brand. If you're going off on months long trips to the back of beyond, or you're not OK with any kind of DIY (even changing a dead battery), then you might pay the extra for the 'better' brands (Fogstar and the like).

If you're very ok with DIY, then a DIY battery is the best of both worlds (can be cheap and good quality).

Hi, which batteries have you fitted under your seats? The biggest I can find are 230 amp lithium.

Self built.Remember lipo can be laid in their side( mine are upright and leave room for a 2 KW inverter under one seat and B2B and solar controller under the other.) ,both are Bluetooth and have heaters cost under £300 each . Fogstar do a 300a underseat I think ??
