Our New Zealand granddaughter is hoping to complete in the 2022 Water Polo championships next August in Sofia. Somehow doubt if we will be able to get to NZ to see the family before then but thought that this might be a great opportunity to see at least her at the event.
any advice on the route and campsites both enroute and in Sofia would be appreciated.

I suppose it really depends how much of a rush you are in to get there.

We spent a short time in Bulgaria a couple of years ago on the way to Greece. We were in no particular hurry and the route we took was France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece. Although that route was partly dictated by the countries Comfort didn’t cover and our desire to visit Croatia. Nevertheless it was an excellent route! Although getting through customs into Bulgaria took forever.

In Sofia we stayed at Camping Sofia, which (from memory) was basic, but pretty cheap and very convenient for the city.

Sofia was a really great place to wander around and, on reflection, wish we’d spent more time there (but we were heading to Greece …)

If you do spend some time in Bulgaria, Plovdiv is worth a visit

And the monastery at Rila was a really magical, atmospheric place - we overnighted in the car park.

Total pr?t that I am!!! It should be Belgrade Serbia!
Thanks Golden vision for your response and some of it will be useful.
Can’t spend too much time before hand as we have some tickets for the Commonwealth Games in Brum in early August. All comes at once.

Even bigger laugh now, our son in NZ advises us that the water polo people had a typo….. should have said Brisbane, Aussie, not BELGRADE!!! Good job I hadn’t booked anything. They will have a better chance of going than us.
