After our last foray across the channel in the spring when we had a series of challenges, mostly technical, I was somewhat apprehensive as we pulled off the drive heading for France on Saturday. Ha!! While my wife parked the cars back on the drive and locked up the house I took a final walk around the motorhome as a final check. I wasn't supposed to find anything!!

But that rear wheel arch cover, which on Swifts is notorious for departing for a flight on the motorway, looks distinctly suspicious. It's got a shifty expression. Tap tap. Sure enough, it's loose! It's just waiting for a chance to make it's bid for freedom.

Out with the sikaflex and that new roll of super sticky black gorilla tape. It's not pretty but my wheel cover is not going on holiday without me.

Perhaps I could suggest that you start your inspection a week earlier or more.

Gives you time to fix it in the UK before venturing across the channel?

No no no... You miss the point. I've been doing my inspections and fixing things. But you know how it is with inanimate objects.... They are just out to get some of us. They hide a problem until it's inconvenient or awkward and then pop up and say: "caught you!!"

My checks start 11 months before hand and usually end up in upgrades that go down to the wire!

Then you couldn't have done it very well?

Electricals I can understand but body work, I'm not so sure?

Yes, yesterday, because I've been having trouble with my wipers that occasionally don't sweep until I stop, turn of the engine, wait 10seconds then start again, they work as normal.

I have already checked and cleaned the fuse inside the cab so yesterday, I decided to do the same to the fuse/relay board in the engine bay.

Strangely, the board there is completely different than the one shown in my handbook so decided to remove N/S light to facilitate removing the cover and do them all.
Thank goodness I did because there was a lot of them that, probably, had never been removed and needed a good clean up and lubrication.

Cover & Headlight back on and wipers all working okay.
At least they did when I tried them.

It was only after, that, while checking the lights that I noticed one of the rear number plate lights was not working and, on examination, the complete bulb and holder had disappeared, hopefully, somewhere inside the door?
