So much for a cheap pub stop tour

As Langtoftlad Stephen reported previously, 2 x Tescos at P/boro are now £1.33 and £1.34 ppl respectively for diesel. Just filled up on our way back home. ;)

Cheers,

Well havnt said much about this as it is just a last minute thing, but thought we would try a few days in Norfolk just useing pubs.
Well useing Keith's pub stop thing it looks as if there are loads of free stops, in reality it's not like that in north Norfolk, very thin on the ground, so after ringing a few ,we are at one now, the lifeboat inn in thornham.
We went in for a meal last night which came to £74 and they had the cheek to add £10 to the bill for parking in the carpark with no facilities whatever.
And there are three others here, a good earner for them.
Anyway moving to Cromer today ,see if we have much better luck there.
We were In Norfolk in April, stay at a lovely adult only park in Swaffham, Breckland Meadows touring park £175 for the week, sounds good value for our week away. Sounds like pub stop overs ain’t all they are cracked up to be.

Long gone are the days when you had 6 canteen ladies cooking.

Back in the late 1970's, in my roll as H&S Rep. for the TGWU, I was also included on a number of Truck & Bus Station Canteen Committees and if you had less than six people, the meat section of a main meal came from Brakes, but the veg were usually cooked in house.

Today, except for the fried items, IMO any establishment that has more than 3 main & pudding items on the menu, chances are, they follow a similar regime.
Unless one is prepare to pay £40+, most of it, probably, has been supplied by an outside catering company, and has been for the last 50yrs.

(Carvery's may be different, I don't know?)
Certainly different in our fav pub in Mum’s town. They buy all their meat from the local butcher which is just up the road and their food is fabulous. They’ve had to put their prices up but it’s money very well spent.

Most pub meals are portions from brakes or the like no skilled chef needed
You might as well get a Tesco meal and get a couple of pints in the pub
I’ve just had 12 nights eating at pubs and nothing very good
Last night food was nice, same pub tonight so called roast was warmed up crap

Don't understand what you are getting at, apparently that's £20 odd a night then you still have eat.

we love pub stops , usually mix them in with stops at campsites when we travel and always have a meal if available but notice that some are stopping due to the freeloaders who think it’s clever to abuse the system ,I think it’s going to end up as 10 -20 £ to stay refunded of your bar/food bill then the freeloaders can hang out in their lay-by’s😠

Although I started this thread on a downer, it eventually turned into the best ever 4 days we have had in UK. Useually we go to France and then use free Aires where we can and then go into the village and eat in a restaurant there.
But this pubstop thing is very similar but you don't have to walk anywhere you have everything in one place. Brilliant.

Never turn back at Canister on Sea is right by the beach don't charge and the food is very reasonable. Need to ring ahead it is very popular, they have reserved parking for motorhomes.

Yeah that was in my plan but was happy where we were so didn't get that far.
We have been going to Norfolk for years so we know the area well but have always used campsites, when the kids were young about forty years ago we stayed at haven in GT Yarmouth for about four years in a row.

In fact this very small trip has restored our interest in UK touring.
Since touring France I had completely give up on ever wanting to visit anywhere in Britain again as we have been to almost everywhere of interest and the thought of useing ridiculous priced campsites is more of an ordeal than pleasure but will plan a longer and better route next time instead of just deciding to go at the last minute.

We stayed in the Never Turn Back pub in Caister on Sea, no overnight charge and reasonably priced meal although it was 2 years ago. Right next to the beach so very nice.

chaser , you must try never turn back if you can, we had great food and free parking, lydll up the road.
Used this pub many times, staff are great lovely food free parking right on the beach but you need to call first as they get really busy and only have 5 or 6 spaces.

Scotland (also in Britain) is great for touring. Did 2 and a half weeks. Spent a total of £28 in parking and waste dumping. Parked at some amazing spots on beaches, lakes, mountains. Once you get above Inverness traffic was sparse. At times I thought we were the only ones there. Public toilets are plentiful, free and clean.

I did Britstops when it first came out (I had the first book and it was updated by print outs 😂) but found the uptake of the idea by the hosts poor, so sacked it off and after the topic was recently raised here again, I thought I'd give it another punt. IMO a waste of money. In two used recently both sucked their teeth and said that the "camping" had been booked up two weeks earlier, despite the book saying ring first on the day of arrival. I then ended up buying stuff that I wouldn't normally out of guilt/expectation that I would. I've now stopped using it again.

chaser Charlie, Your thread prompted me to look for Keith's pub stop map. I know I've seen it before, but can I find it now ? No, grrr
Could you post a link or tell me where it is ?
Cheers
Chris

Back in England on our way back to Wales after a trip to Eire , atm at a pub stop in Caton, cost us £36.50 for food and a couple of drinks, what’s not to like?
stopped here last year on our way up to follow Hadrians wall and will no doubt be back again next time up this way.
love pub stops , ended up in fascinating places we’d never of visited otherwise 👍

I presume you are joking, if not in actual fact we have saved £20-30 because we would have still gone out for a meal on top of that. (y)

So how does the landlord know you are the big spender who bought half-pint of shandy and a packet of crisps rather than some FLT who has pulled in for a cheeky quiet night? ;)

I wouldn't want to be woken by an irate person with a long iron bar and a couple of ferocious-sounding dogs at 2am.

Gordon
Simples, he charges £15 a night but you get it back when you spend in the pub.
