We are driving thro France in to Spain begin of March, is it compulsory to carry snow chains even we do not intend to go in to any mountainous areas. Thank

I don't believe chains are necessary - but snow tyres are compulsory until the end of March in the blue areas

"To improve road traffic in mountainous areas and the safety of users, it is mandatory to equip your vehicle with winter tyres or to hold snow chains or socks of the 1to November 2022 to March 31, 2023 in certain mountainous areas." That from here. There is a downloadable list of the 'certain mountainous areas' but you need to know your french areas well to see if you're affected. I'm going down next week so I'm going to have to buy some snow chains, which I'll probably never have to use. :(

We have snow chains, very heavy, never used them and probably never will.

Anyone been stopped for not having them, and more importantly fined?

As insurance I bought a set of (the cheapest) snow chains which I can show if needed. Doubt if I could fit them with my creaky joints though.

What is the source for this map please?
I think the map in post #2 above is incorrect. The official French gov website giving detailed maps for each of the affected mountainous regions is here.

Note, that it is often not whole Departments (Counties) that are affected but just certain areas within them.

Also, I think that this year is another "advisory" year, like last year where you will be given a talking to rather than fined, due to the French governments inability to get the required legislation passed in time.

That link just brings up a blank page for me :(

I have a set of AutoSock 685 for sale £45 Never been used, if anyone's interested PM me.
Complies with regulations but much lighter than chains. :giggle:
