snow chains and wet grass

Bought the snow chains from Lidl today but was wondering if anyone had tried them on wet grass or mud. As we all know these front wheel drive vehicles are useless in those conditions.

not a good idea unless you want to get banned from a site, chains will rip a field to bits. Far better to ask for a tow before damaging the grass, or wait until it dries up

I could use them on a site that I did not wan't to go back to

Why would I put them back in your van, are you staying on the same site that I'm not going back to.

Have you checked that they are ok for a m/h as the ones in our store last week I believe were for cars ....as normally they are a commercial quality depending on your van I suppose ..just a thought :thumb:

i looked last time they were in lidl and they were only suited to 13" and 14" tyres. anything big enough to fit a van or 4x4 tyre also need to be heavier duty or they will just fall to bits on first use

virtually a waste of time on mud....unless theres a solid substructure under the mud, larger stones, rubble, tree roots etc.

the chains need something to 'bite' into and mud isnt up to the job, just as very deep snow wont get you any grip on the chains either until you get down to the tarmac.

they are designed for hard packed and polished snow or ice

While we are on the subject. Has anyone had experience of the "snow socks" that are used as an alternative to chains ? In particular are they any use on wet grass or mud ?

socks on mud or wet grass are worse than just plain tyres, theres nothing to grip with. once coated in mud the contact area is lubricated so will slip easier

In my experience, the first and very effective remedy for mud is to dramatically reduce tyre pressures.

The attached pic was taken at Allrad in Germany earlier this year. We drove out of there without assistance. Many others needed tractor tows.

I have also found snow chains to be highly effective in mud.

There are available chains suited to snow or snow and mud - the chain section on the dual purpose ones are heavier to give the grip in mud - we carry dual purpose chains. Not available from all suppliers or in all sizes but a specialist will be able to advise

I bought some last time they were in Lidl. They didn't have many for larger tyres but we were in early enough to get some. Never used them though.
