Hi everyone

We are thinking of going to Spain after Xmas
We have not done this before. We travel quite a lot around the uk. Love it. But everyone says go to Spain for the winter. Or 90 days. We have lithium batteries solar panels pretty well self sufficient. Mobile router. We like the internet.
QUESTION is What would be the best sim to put in our mobile router please.

Any other tips for travelling to Spain would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Richard & Janet
Both in our 70s

Have a look at these if you contact them via email Camino is very helpful and will explain you can get sims with less data if you ask the coverage is great and no contract😊

Vodaphone are doing a 100gb at the moment on pAYG fir £15 with any unused data rolling over. Might be wise to look into this now before the offer ends.

Most Vodafone offer sim deals have no roaming allowance without additional charges.
I have a second sim 140gb £10 a month but roaming is £8 for 8 days or £15 for 15 days, with a fair usage of 25gb per month.
All their full price sim have the 25gb cap.

Ask Speve suggests...cannot beat it...best SIM deal for Spain...to my knowledge..
Willing to answer any specific questions regarding winters in Spain via here or PM...we have lived here for 20 odd years and travel all year in our MH whilst not at home in Murcia...best tip...Enjoy one of the best winter destinations there is..

Just be aware of the fair useage data limit providers apply especially if you intend to stream tv which gobbles it up very quickly.

No this includes roaming, will see if I can get a photo of the advertised deal

We have Tiekom sim and Express vpn works perfectly. On a different point. Expect campsites on the coast to be full or near capacity, book ahead if you want certainty (we do). Aires will also be busy so get there early for a decent spot. A lot less free camping than there used to be. Searchforsites still the best app.

When we were looking to change the house to data sim, vodaphone specifically stated in the local shops x 2 that those are phone plans & cannot be used in a router. No doubt someone has ? 2 year ontract bak then & they also wouldn't allow cancellation if we had no signal at the house. Which is where the problem is .

Sounds good but I can’t get anything from their website up on my screen other than some silly photos of people jumping and a cat with sunglasses.

No idea Richard, all I can tell you is it’s working in our mifi 👍

How much data do you need Hayesdec ?

I've just got a Talkmobile sim, 30 days (no contract, just give 30 days notice to end it), at £4.98 a month for the first 3 months (half price), then £9.95 a month. I get 40gb of data in UK and 12gb in EU, there are other data levels so if you really only need it for EU use then a cheaper one would likely do you, similar deals with Lebara too:

Can I ask the data experts on Spain what sim provider they would recommend for us non-heavy usage folk with a mifi?

I have giffgaff which I think gives me 60 odd days free roaming - at least it did last time out - but wondering whether, apart from the usual high street crowd I could find better.
The Tiekom mentioned here runs at c€40 per month and frankly I wont need that much data.

Budget €10 ish per month.

Ive used vodafone, orange yoigo in Spain in the past.

Cheers

Very useful thanks.

Do you know whether I would have to activate it immediately or can I wait until my free roaming period with giffgaff finishes (after 60 odd days) and activate it from Spain then?

As a new contract it is activated as soon as you purchase it online so you can't delay it.

Choose providers with 100% coverage.. some remote areas do not guarantee cover, this is why our personal phones have different companies...I have Vodafone (Hits Mobile) and jumartoo uses Orange.,(Simyo)....
Of course if you base yourself on the Costas or major cities and towns. this isn't a great issue....

We got one of these, easy enough to get, rock up at a vodafone shop with a passport. managed to use some of our roaming minutes in France as well.

No need for a vpn for general surfing, Netflicks and BBC sounds, We ve got 2 phones on O2 and a lebara sim in our mifi for when we want to watch All4, or I player. Dont forget its winter use.

You need to make sure you activate/use a SIM in its country of origin first or it won't work when you go abroad. Had this problem with a Lebara SIM when we went to Ireland.

the Lebara deal we have is unlimited in UK but 25GB/month roaming, but they also say that they you are supposed not to use it more roaming than you do in UK. No idea why this matters.

Most phone companies have limits on data roaming as a result of leaving the EU. Whether it's because it costs them more now or whether they are just using it as an excuse to save money/charge us more I am not sure. I used to use Smarty unlimited in EU but now it's just 12GB

It's because it is a UK sim so meant to be used more here than abroad, if not then you are not really using it as a UK sim in the real sense so should be purchasing one abroad to use there. I think this partly came about due to people getting cheap contracts in the UK and then using them when abroad for long periods of time (eg at holiday homes for 6 months) and gobbling lots of data, this was before a lot of them put restrictions on.

l dont think this is the case, because EU sim cards such as the Vodafone. Es also have fair usage restrictions when roaming in other EU countries.

I get why the fair usage came in but our Lebara sim already has a 25gb limit while roaming, unlimited in Uk so not a big deal but not really understanding why you need to use less roaming than when in Uk. for info they also have the no more than 2 months in any 4 limit.

As I indicated its because they are sold as UK sims, I suspect if you bought a Lebara sim abroad it would have a similar restriction for use in the UK.
