Anyone else had a problem with water getting in at the top of the door with external silverscreens fitted to a Ford Transit cab? It’s a 2024 cab.

It’s only a few drips but need to work out how to stop it. We’ve only had the screens a few months but this happens every time it rains, I’ve made sure they’re fitted correctly, as per the instructions from Silverscreens.

Thanks

The water visible through the glass is because I took the screens off earlier in the rain and re-fitted them. It’s just the drips at the very top that are the problem.

Hi Steve. It would suggest the door is not pushing onto the seal correctly at the top? Looks more of an issue with the top of the door to the seal rather than the silver screens to be honest? Just another thought..the material that hooks over the door looks quite loose and not pulled over enough? Is it worth the while just fitting the door sections without the screen panel to see if they fit better ?
Just a thought bud? Kev (y);)

  • Alignment issues:
Sometimes, misaligned doors can also contribute to leaks, so check if the door closes properly and fully against the frame.
Just found this steve from another chappy with a seal issue on a new ford transit van...kev

Thanks Kev, I’ll try fitting the door panels without the front screen next time… great idea! We only get water coming through when the screens are fitted… but maybe it’s not fitted right and fouling the door seal. Cheers

We have the same problem with our silver screen on a MAN tge van , the first screen was returned as the sleeve part was also padded like the external part and water was coming in badly . Next screen isn’t padded on sleeve like Steve’s and only drips if raining hard , did think about adjusting door shut but they are hard to close anyway .

I’ve occasionally had the same problem on a Ducato but only in heavy rain. I’ve not actually looked to see why, just placed a cloth on the door arm to collect the drops 😜

The water is coming in through capillary action. It only needs about 0.1mm gap IIRC for the surface tension to pull it through. I suspect the top seal is not pushing hard enough on the fabric. We had it once when one of the doors was not properly shut. Pulling it down hard as suggested by WASPES may be all it needs to stop the water pooling along the seam. If that does solve it get some lengths of something like This and run it along the top edge of the door so it's proud on the exterior. The rubber plus the extra cushioning should stop it. Do not use foam rubber as most of those support capillary action as can be seen when you put a dry sponge in the bath. The top becomes wet before it is completely submerged.

Similar problem very occasionally with our Taylormade screens on a Ducato.
If you don't pull the screens down and forward tightly you can get a "wrinkle" over the top of the door that lets water in.

If we haven’t used the screens for a while Manic always fits the door screens first.
The first few times we used screens the filet, that gets shut in the door, had a crease in it and that funnelled rain in thru the door-shut!
Yours looks like a bit of the thicker material is getting caught in the door-shut

Never had water ingress with any Taylormade screens, that’s why I won’t have any that slip over the corner of the door. Our a class has external runners so slides into them, so no doors need to be touched in fitting them (Taylormade)👍

I have never had problems with my Taylormade but when I bought it, they did ask if I had Remis blinds fitted as they need a slightly different profile.
Another thing I like about Taylormade is that they are a small company and will alter if necessary! 👍

transits are notorious for water ingress over the cab doors. side & rear are only slightly better

You could put some suckers on to secure the top of the door panels instead of using the over door sections. Our mh only has one door so on the opposite side I just put through 3 suckers (top, middle and bottom) which go on the outside of thewindow and it stays put even in stormy weather.

We have the same issue.
Mercedes Sprinter base, doors are fitted with Remis blinds, Polar silver screen.

I think the issue is simply the corner section that fits over the door means there is a layer if plastic cloth between the rubber to rubber seal.
Water comes in by capillary action.

I think the only way to sure the problem would be to fit gutters above the doors to direct the water off the roof elsewhere, or park stern down, so that more water goes off the back than goes off the front.
Otherwise as others have suggested hold the screen on in another way, elasticated paracord may be an option.

I have had this problem on both Fiat and Mercedes Panel van conversions, strangely not on any of the coach built. I think it's because coach built tend to have a bit of an overhang above the cab doors,

We have a TGE as well with Polar Screens and if the wind/rain is in the right direction we get a few drips occasionally but not enough to bother us. We pick up the drips with the corner of a Campasorb pad.

Mine did the same on a Ford when you put the screen over the door pull it down so that the top seam is lower than the top of the door otherwise it acts as a gutter. It does stop it happening.
Agree it’s the same issue with our ducato. If you don’t pull the Screen down until the seam is showing at the top of the door on (the outside) the water seeps in. Otherwise silverscreens at v good an watertight!

It looks as though you need silver screens with the Remis blind larger pocket that goes over the corner of door and blind. The material then isn’t so taught and fits better.

My Taylormade one, has on the inside of the cab doors, large velcro flaps with generous adjustment, they cover nearly half the inside of the cab door windows. 👍

Had the same problem on our x290 Ducato. Silver Screen was from a previous moho without Remis blinds. Worked fine on the old van but leaked on the new with Remis blinds.
Bought a new Silver Screen suitable for the blinds and no problem since.

The vehicle's door seal hasn't lost a bit of it's springyness that can be restored with some silicone grease in the relevant spot?

Having tried various methods of fitting them (with no luck) I’ve returned the Silver screens cover. I have to say they were excellent, no faff and very quick to send the refund.

Think I’m going to go for a Taylor made screen cover… I’ve watched a few review videos and the extra Velcro adjustment will hopefully mean we can get a better fit and stop and water dripping into the cab.

Great feedback, good luck with the new ones.
Look forward to hearing how they work for you.
