Hi Peeps......replacing the narrow but cracked sealing gunned in between steel cab and plastic panels/roof moulding with Sikaflex 512. What is the best way of a neat and tidy application with a mastic gun, please. Is it worth me hanging on until I have the solvent jollop to assist. It was a task knifing out the old stuff in the sun today. That is some tough stuff. Al

You could put masking tape close to and each side of the joint.
Simple remove before the mastic cures.

Many thanks pappajohn. How about where it’s going in the groove of the panels ? Quarter to half inch width. Not a wet finger I guess as with silicone. Excuse the yellow stripes in the photo, it’s the sun, don’t you know ! Al

For bathroom silicone these smoothing tools are fantastic and I have had great great results with these. You use them with the flat face and it works due to the rake angle of the back of the tool.

OK you're going to faint at the price but they are brilliant.

white spirit acts as a solvent for sikaflex whilst still wet

Run 2 strips of masking tape to guarantee a consistent line

Just did the same job (well, a few weeks back).
As the guys say, masking tape either side of the joint, standard masking gun and sealant cannister (I used Puraflex 40), once applied remove excess with a plastics spatula (glue spreader type thingy), then use same spatula dipped in turps to smooth the sealant, remove masking tape whilst sealant is still "wet" and your nearly done.
If there's a slightly raised ridge left when pulling of the masking tape wait a few hours until sealant is touch dry and "tap" these flat with the spatula.

Many thanks for your tips, Peeps. The tenner spent at Scrooge Fit was worth every penny for the smootherer thingies, Mark. I’ve done a bench test on joining two pieces of plastic in a vice and used the white spirit to do the necessary. Al

As with all sealant as steady hand with even movement and pressure on the trigger. That and a set of Fugi sticks (google it), warm soapy water and roll of kitchen towel.

Thanks peter, never knew there were so many options including the fugi sticks......but ready to roll manana if it isn’t raining.

Hi,
Used Sikaflex 512 on van today. Really happy with job.

Best tip is to use baby wipes. They are bloody brilliant for removing excess. Then....use a jar of soapy water and run finger around the joint to smooth off. Great result. Trust me and the carpenter mate I pinched the tip off😁

Just make sure you don't use them on the baby's bum thereafter!
