Shuttleworth trust. ‘Wild Camping’

It’s not wild camping if you have to pay. What it is is no facility camping

Our friends have been in their caravan to an event there and really enjoyed it.

I'm there every year for the nsra supernationals but the nsra arrange their own toilets/showers/elsan facilities 👍

Hi, How far are you away from the flying field and have they let camping on airshow days ?
I stayed on a steam rally weekend. We were next to the air strip. Planes were coming and going throughout the day. We had a great view.

I don't know about airshow days.

I imagine the camping is always next to the airstrip, the other areas are either behind the house down in the 'valley' or up in the trees on the hill
I know last year they extended the camping area to include where the rugby/football pitches were which is easier with the new entrance road

I have stayed there a number of times in my van. I have arrived the afternoon before the display to have breakfast on the airshow day as the visiting aircraft fly in. The overnight parking is in a dedicated area for camping and there is a toilet emptying facility behind one of the hangers.
However I have decided that they have now priced themselves out of my interest zone as they are charging £40 for a two night stay in addition to the purchase of an airshow ticket.

Indeed, I just looked at the season premiere and 2 nights (is the minimum) for 2 people is £138!

We've been to the flying proms a couple of times it was really good but we didn't camp because at the time there were only a few spaces and we had a dog. Might give it a go this year.

I was at a display at Shuttleworth in 2014 and we were on our way to catch the ferry to France the next day.
I live in Yorkshire so l asked an official if it was possible to stay overnight, after a chat with the show director she agreed that l could stay in a seperate field along with the volunteers who help to run the show.
I was charged the princely sum of £10 and l think the seed was then sown.

We have a camping weekend booked for one of their airshows this summer. Yes its expensive, but this Trust runs a superb show and the vintage planes are very expensive to run, so they need all the financial help they can get. We've often been to the shows for the day in our van, and been very envious of the vans that are staying on afterwards. Someone mentioned they didn't go because of having a dog-Shuttleworth are unusual in allowing dogs to attend their airshows-the planes are not that noisy compared to modern aircraft so the dogs seem fine-the only problem we used to have with our dogs was keeping the sun off them on a rare sunny airshow day. Its a lovely genteel experience, and the gardens and house make it well worth the trip (no dogs in those though)

We were there in September 2014 ... the MH "wild camping" area was well-known to folk then. I can't recall the fee but it was reasonable as it included "free" admission to the collection. This was the first time that I experienced so many campers using generators to power their large TVs, music systems etc. so as to create a cacophony in their awnings whilst they went off to see the evening events in the show area.
