Hi,
We have recently had our Burstner motorhome on a Fiat Ducato base (18 maxi), 03 plate MOT'd and been told there is no CAT on it. There was a repair done to the exhaust a few weeks ago, which was just a straight pipe, and the mechanic has said there was no CAT there.
The garage has said that there are 2 models of our motorhome, one has a CAt and one doesnt, but we cant seem to establish which catagory ours falls into. We have called Fiat, and countless garages and still havent been able to find the answer. Currently waiting for a response from the Fiat heritage team to see if they can tell us difinatively, but wondered if anybody else has had this issue?

I think the answer lies in the question…..it doesn’t 🤦‍♂️🤣

Unless you think the mechanic has cut it out and nicked it😳
Helpful! We have no reason to believe that the mechanic is lying considering its a family member. The problem is the garage saying it should have one!

how long have you had the motorhome? if youve never had an issue then i would leave as is,

i think the CAT will be engine specific not motorhome specific, so if you can find your engine number that might help.

additionally, whilst not wanting to question the mechanics knowledge ......... but .... perhaps he is wrong, it has been known ....

We have only had it a year almost to the day. I suppose thats the problem, either party could be wrong, we just need to find the answer so we can get it sorted and get back out in it. Currently waiting for Fiat Heritage to come back to us, as due to the age of the vehicle, the info isnt stored on Fiat's database! Another garage has said that on their MOT system, vehicles registered between 2000/05 would be euro 3 so it wouldnt have one.

What's the problem with going out in it?

It's MOT'd and taxed isn't it?

It deoends WHEN it was built not when registered as a built motorhome, there can be years difference from one to the other. Its an 03 so could have been a year in production, stood on dealers 6 month,

Euro 3 focussed on particulates, it'll have a DPF but no CAT. Euro 4 built during & after 2005 should have a CAT fitted although there were still Euro 3's fitted during the cross over.

So, your initial post is unclear….are you saying that an MOT was refused as the tester stated there should be a CAT, or was it issued, and he simply commented that it didn’t have one?

The former might be worthy of further investigation, but if the latter…….go drive, enjoy, and have a GnT 😉

Yes I am thinking along the same lines as brewery Dave. If it passed the mot without a cat then it doesn’t require one. Jump in and enjoy the vehicle.

No it failed the MOT as they said it didnt have a CAT, when we queries it and said it didnt have one on it, they said there were 2 models of our van one with and one wiithout but couldnt determine what ours was. so it currently has no MOT until we can get an answer

Here is an AI response
Looks to be dependant on the age of the van. If your van was a 2002 van registered in 2003 the dealer probably got away with it. Best to take it to the last place the mot was done and see if they will let it through assuming the emissions are ok.

That does seem to Be bit awkward then. If it originally had a cat that had been removed would there not be some extra electrics or pipes dangling underneath somewhere that would give the game away or maybe have one retro fitted but I reckon that would not be cheap. Best of luck with that one and I am sure the outcome will be most interesting to everybody

The easiest way would be to tell the mechanic to get a cat of the same exhaust diametr fronm a scrapyard/new.knock the guts out of it & then weld that in place. There is no test of a cat alytic converter. As long as the "Cat" outside is there that will suffice

You need to complain. They cannot prove it should have one or if it should not, therefore they should have passed it

DPF statre on moderns around 2009 Cat's around 2000
they said there were 2 models of our van one with and one wiithout but couldnt determine what ours was.
as above then they should have passed it.You cannot fail something that you do not know whether it should/should not be in place
so it currently has no MOT until we can get an answer
as above.

So they failed your mot but could not be sure it needed a cat fitted!
Get a phone call to vosa, if the mit place failed your vehicle they need to state which section it failed on and give proof

Take it to another MOT station as they are talking poo

They themselves are saving there are two versions one with CAT one without. They can’t prove yours should have a CAT so they can’t fail it.

Go somewhere else that knows what they are doing

‘Yes, it is mandatory for a motorhome to have a catalytic converter if it was first registered on or after September 1, 2002. If the motorhome was registered before that date, the catalytic converter is not mandatory for an MOT, but it may still be required for a full emissions
test.’

I would say this is a load of AI nonsense and not true. We have a 2004 registered Burstner Elegance 2.8 Ducato base MH and it does not have a CAT nor has it ever had one.

Agreed. If the AI doesn't know, it'll just make it up (hallucinate). But it will always sound confident about the answer it gives. If you can't find much about something on the internet, you can guarantee that asking and AI engine will just feed you garbage because it was trained by skimming the internet.

Correct me if I’m wrong but it’s always been my understanding that,

Diesels engines have DPF filters.

Petrol engines have catalytic converters .
