4 yrs in total but not consecutively. Just bought the 3rd.
I've been bitten once so twice shy.

A 1989 Talbot (Ford 1933cc) has come up for sale - 6K. Not sure of mileage yet but think it's under 60k. Does anyone know are these likely to give bother & if it's MOT'd (again waiting on the question being answered) do you think it would be a good buy?

Thanks in advance...

just be very careful to check the rust situation. If well looked after they were good vans, but prone to rot around the cab, especially the windscreen surround. It's a massive welding job to put one right. mechanically they are fairly solid but underpowered and usually no power steering

Not an expert on older Talbots but I do recall mention in the past that rust can be a big big problem. Okay rust is (usually) repairable but frankly why would you want to saddle yourself with problems. Don't take too much notice of "current MoT", go have a good look/get professional inspection.

Ah, he beat me to it!

We bought a new Camelot Camper on a Talbot panel Van in 1987. Mechanically very good and the engine will go on forever. Sadly a different story with the body work. In and out of dealership for warranty work because of rust. Below windscreen, bottom of rear doors and bumper to name a few places. All easy to see though

If you know the reg number you can check the mot on the DVLA site, as for anything else 30 years is a long time, and 6 grand does seem a bit steep.
But if everything checks out there's nowt wrong with old vans.

Thanks - I checked - It was out of MOT last August but I'm waiting on confirmation that he's putting it through the MOT before I'd buy - wouldn't touch it with a barge pole if it wasn't.

Have you looked at its MOT history and not just the current year?
It will show any historic rust/corrosion issues.

The big problem with a motorhome of that age is availability of parts. The manufacturer and the converter would have stopped supporting it years ago.

spongy

We had a Talbot and it came with a very rusty area - about the size of a football from the front windscreen down. Luckily we found Simon, in Arclid, near Stoke, who specialises in Talbot bodywork.

My son had one and it too had alot of rust around the windscreen, however after it was treated it was a cracking van that still goes on now

Thanks - it does seem a sturdy van inside & out. I will take a more detailed look at it before I buy.

Thanks Landy Andy - it looks good for the money. Only problem is we're in NI - MHs do seem to be cheaper on the mainland, don't they. I didn't see that Advert but someone private messaged me & I assume it's the same one.

Hi - I didn't realise you could do that - I will definitely check it out. It looked pretty clean to me but I looked at several so further inspection needed. Thanks!
