Should I be Truthful?

Some ferries put vans etc. on the drop down upper decks when very busy, you could be unlucky and lose a roof light or solar panel.
I very much doubt they would work on that little of a safety gap. Too much risk.

My new Van is 3.1 metres tall.
Brittany Ferries prices increases from 3 metres.
So, do I try sneak a cheaper price by stating that I am 3 metres??
Being a Scotsman and knowing the value of a pound 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.
I would value answers from anyone who has already done this.
With my previous van 2.8 metres tall and I was parked in the hold of ferry next to Concord and Morello…👍

Provided that your 3.1m includes any stuff on the roof that raises the height of the van (solar panels, vents, skylights, etc), I guess no one is likely to argue about 4" either way.

Mrs CC said the extra 4 inches makes so much difference , don’t think she knows what she’s on about as she’s never been on a ferry🤔🤔

Years ago we always crossed on the SeaCat fast ferry or hovercraft from Dover you we’re always measured as the height was critical we saw quite a few turned away as they were over height .

Fit lower/adjustable suspension or possibly let the air out of the Tyres 🛞😉 not helpful I know

You may also find the height changes when fully loaded

Hang on.

Spend 'HOW MUCH!!!!' (I can say that, it's in my genes.) on adjustable suspension to save what?

Just done a 'dummy booking' on BF.

As a Club voyage member the difference between 7Mts. and 8 Mts. was £14.

However, if I declared myself to be >3.0Mts in height, BF also assume you are 9+Mts
in length and charge an additional £14 on top of that.

Didn't do it without CV membership but I assume as a bare booking it's £20 an uplift.

It all depends on what dimensions are supplied by the manufacturer. Our the years I have owned a number of Toyota Hilux Invincible as Company cars (less tax). I had always booked the same length when booking a ferry. One year I bowled up at Portsmouth and the guy asked if I had made a mistake when booking with the length. I said no as the Hilux is less than 5 MTRS. He got out of his cabin and measured the length with a wheel. The new model of Hilux was longer than the previous models. The info came from number plate recognition.

Having seen some videos of vans driving onto the ferries to Spain there is plenty of height and all the vans big and small seem to go in where the lorries park so I cannot see why they charge extra for height, different length charges are obvious.

I was sure I read on here of someone who lost their roof lights when a deck was dropped?

IS your van 3.1 meters, or was it when new, and before you put all the crap in it?
A bit much describing vital necessities we can't possibly do without as crap

Many benefits to adjustable suspension better cornering better clearance all at the press of a button ;)

Brittany Ferries are probably the most stringent when it comes to height and length. They have paint markings on the ground at the check in kiosks and a guy walks around with a height stick checking vehicle, although never seen him do motorhomes. Both methods used for checking length and height are very rudimentary and are never going to identify a 10cm discrepancy. However, is that the vehicle height or do you have any aircon or aerials etc which push it even taller?

I have often wondered about the tunnel, it is self check in and nobody seems to be worried about anything until you go to borde control so would have thought it would be easy to have a trailer on the back and not pay for it?

I have been parked next to a chap in a motorhome at Portsmouth who took his bicycles of his rear bike rack and shoved them in through the habitation door. He had not declared or pais the extra for a bike rack.

Most motorhomes are 2.8m - 2.9m. These are nearly always over 3m with stuff on the roof and none of them (us) admit this when booking ferries. Just remember it when passing under bridges.

DFDS at Dover have automatic height measurement
What's the worst that could happen?
You get sent to the "bungalow" at dover & charged as freight if they wish to be funny . That is what i was told when sent there. I've no idea how that would work as I said to the bloke I'd just leave, rebook & return.

it used to be quite strict . under 3m declared meant you could safely be put under the overhead car deck

The risk is yours if you have declared incorrectly.

On Newhaven/Dieppe they have just two sizes for Motorhomes 4m high x 7m long & 4m high 10m long.
