The roof light in our living area on a Burford Duo has ran into issues, wound it up today and it lifted then stopped.

I’ve pulled down the inner section and wound the spline by hand and it will neither go up or down, leaving me with a slight opening that I can’t close, so I’m guessing the worm drive has gone.

I can seal it with tank tape for now, but need to find the best economical way to fix.

Had to replace the bedroom one in March, but that had blown off so ordered a complete unit from Auto-sleepers, basically £1k so rather not do that again.

Help please

So I've got the new lifting mechanism BUT how the hell to I get to fit it, the roof light is closed and won't open (other that a small opening in one corner)

There are no screws on the outside to allow access, there are 2 black plastic oblong covers, but these don't appear to come off?

Without the roof open, I can't change the mechanism, and the roof is stuck shut as it needs a new mechanism.

Any ideas anyone.

Yup... been there done that !
Turn the spindle as best you can while giving a hearty push upwards to the vent ( I used a broom.. soft enough not to cause scratches, firm enough to take all the push needed :-) )

I would have just changed the whole lot to a simpler type, the one you just push up without any winding mechanism, so much less to go wrong.

But that would cost more, and that’s important right now, been on furlough since March

Yes it would now but initially in March you have paid a grand and you could have got a new one for about £300 of the simpler type.

I think you may have to remove it altogether to get at it properly and repair.

Yes that was earlier in the year when the bedroom roof light blew away in a high wind, only place I could get one quickly was Auto-Sleepers, I didn’t have the luxury of an option at that point as I had a hole in the roof and a trip planned.

Now the living area roof light has an issue, but it’s still water tight, and I’m no longer earning £1400 a day.
