Driving along in my automobile etc I got to thinking about solar panel charging.

If I'm driving along at 50mph and its a dull day which charging system is charging my batteries?
The alternator or the solar panels.
I have a separate dual battery solar charger wired to both batteries and the standard Burstner Electrobloc charger available.
Would I be better turning of the solar when I'm driving?

Better leaving all charging sources on at any time. The source currently producing the higher voltage will be doing the work. The rest will do nothing.

Does the higher voltage also mean higher charging?
Solar panels at 14.4V and 3 amps or alternator at 14.4 and 20 amps?

Both until the battery voltage approaches the charger voltage when the potential difference between the battery and chargers cannot sustain full changing current so the changing current will fall.

If your Ford based it may be closer to 15 VDC

And what about the feeble gel charging characteristics? Gel battery(s) in parallel with a lead acid battery charging at 14.8 VDC

The solar panel is the least of your problems ;)

Denpends on the quality of the solar regulator and the cable size used for the split charge relay, highest voltage will win and cable size of the split charge system, highest voltage will win.

Well spotted - I'm at the hospital waiting for an abdominal scan. Hopefully nothing serious.
I hope the technician isn't too tall otherwise it could end up being an abominable scan! :D

Hope everything went okay ....
