Has anyone any information on renewal of driving licence at 70 keeping grandfather rights to retain C1 class to drive Moho over 3500 tonnes under the Covid crisis. DVLA appear to be only taking calls etc for keyworkers And I can not order the correct pack to apply by post. Our local post office does not have any medical forms.

Hi Pete H. Thanks for the link for medical form D4. However have you a link for the application form to retain GF rights.

If it was dangerous for me at 70 to drive over 3500kg then why is it not dangerous now ??

You will receive a renewal application for your ordinary licence. Download the D4 application via the link already given then get an appointment with D4 medicals, who specialise in doing medicals for your renewal and you will find the nearest centre to where you live on their website. Do not go to your doctor as they will charge around £120 but D4 medical charge £50 and will do,the eye test as well as filling in the form. It is sometimes an idea to get a free eye test prior to your medical and take it with you.
It is also worth noting that if you send in the renewal too long before your licence is due you will loose that number of months I.e. if your renewal is August send it in late in July. The medical D4 lasts for 4 months after being completed so take your time. Have just renewed mine for the second time ,it is easy and don’t let it worry you it is not a problem. Send your ordinary renewal form as well as the D4 and they will take your photo from your passport info on line. Good luck

Hi, having read about entitlement to C1 i checked my licence yesterday which i renewed to a photo licence in 2018 when i was 70 and found C1 was not included. We have a motorhome now so i thought that C1 would be useful. I guess i have to get a medical on next renewal next year but will check with DVLA.

Sorry just seen all the info in replies, thanks.

And D4Driver is taking booking on many locations and is £55 against my doctors £120 plus they are not taking any booking. Yes I can confirm you can get all the forms off the gov web site. As long as the medical and forms completed and in the post to DVLA I believe it is therefore legal to drive.

The D4 is easy to download but is the license application form that they send out automatically the same as the one needed to keep C1?

edit
You need the D2 form I think it is only the D1 that they send out.

Being well over 70, I had my licence renewal notice which is for HGV + PSV which is an annual renewal and I read on this forum that DVLA were giving a 12 month licence renewal with out the need for eye sight or medical test
I sent my licence renewal form with out any medical/eyesight forms and was very pleased that last Wednesday my renewed licence for the next 12 months came through the letter box

If by free eye test you mean at the opticians they aren't doing any routine eye exams at the moment triaging urgent symptoms by phone face to face only if clinically necessary.

I think they are treating HGV and PSV licenses differently to C1, there is no mention of an extension for C1.

That's unfortunately how it works - if you renew online, you automatically lose C1.

The LGV PVC Non medical renewal does not apply for C1. Medical required I’m afraid.

Have you got anywhere with this dvla say you have to do it by post but they also say that they are not doing post bit of a catch 22!

Yes, I surrendered my C1 some years ago, due to cancer, but recovery was good and I reapplied, no issues. I would also use D4 for the medical. A friend of ours recently used D4 and sent his completed pack in via registered post, he got a squiggle signature....and the licence a few days later.

Im just waiting for the medical now having completed the D2 form (pack from the post office contained the medical form) and had an eye test as mine had just gone beyond 2 yrs. So hopefully all done after the medical next saturday.
