Tesla just announced it can recycle 92% of Lithium batteries. This is a very good start. Bearing in mind this is new technology that they are just getting started on. Expect this number to rise.

I only post this to show those who think that the batteries are not recyclable and go to landfill that they are wrong.

I suspect JB Straubel's recycling company is already above this figure.

The company says that it had 1,300 tons of nickel, 400 tons of copper, and 80 tons of cobalt recycled in 2020.
Sounds good doesn't it? But let's put that in to perspective.
That's a total of less than 2000 tons, as a battery pack is say 250kg that's around 8000 cars in a 2020 out of 512,000 produced.
So genuine efforts for the future or just publicity bs.

It's a new production line. you start off small and ramp up.

Plus there is the availability issue. Not many dead EV batteries ready for recycling yet.

It will only ramp up if it's cheaper to recycle, no idea if that's the case for all the materials recovered.

It will ramp because end of life batteries quantity will ramp up.
It is cheaper to recycle for materials than it is to mine for them.

The vast bulk of a battery is aluminium and copper. No one can doubt it is cheaper to recycle the battery than it is to mine for new copper and aluminium,

Up till now the problem has been the batteries have been it too small a quantity and size, surrounded in different packaging, and in various qualities and chemistries.

An EV battery is one big single uniform chunk that the recycling of can be easily automated... I posted a video by JB Straubel about this subject some time ago. Worth a watch.
