We're currently camping on the coast south-west of Tarragona, making our way leisurely towards Alicante.

We are looking for one or two peaceful stopover campsites en route - either coastal or just inland.

Would welcome any suggestions - thanks!

It’s very busy along here at present, as I think people are avoiding going further south. The stories of resorts being washed away and billions of mosquitoes is enough to keep anyone away.

We’re on La Finca at Tavernes and it’s packed with people queuing outside. Previously we’ve arrived here and had a choice of pitches.

There are two sites and an Aire at Alcossebre. We like Alcossebre and usually stay at Playa Tropicana as it’s next to the sea. There are sites at Benicassim but we prefer the free Aire at Grau. There are a few sites around Oliva and Denia. We prefer Kiko because it’s on the beach. Dogs are tolerated on the beach here. We’ve also stayed at Rio Mar, which is smaller but also on the beach.

Try the Aire at Playa San Juan, we liked it.

Vickysponge is spot on. Have used the site at Peniscola several times. Camping Eden, I think. Big beach, town close by. Also near Benicassim and Vinaros.

There is also Camping Estanyet at Cases De Alcanar, a small family run site which we love.

Thanks so much for your replies!

We are on a stunning naturist site - El Templo del Sol, at L'Hospitalet de L'Infant. Our pitch directly overlooks the lovely El Torn beach. Only snag, there is almost zero mobile signal and the site wi-fi is rubbish. Oh and a trainline runs almost through the site!

Can't quite believe the weather - arrived on the French Med 11 days ago and it's been wall-to-wall sunshine since then.

And yes, we're not hurrying to Alicante because of the warnings about all the tiger mosquitos. But we are leaving the van garaged there for winter and fly back to Blighty on Friday. Return to Spain later in the month, heading to Almeria.

Thanks again for the heads-up.

Liking the sound of Camping Estanyet!

Think we might see if we can get in there.

Appreciate the suggestion Vicky! (y)

A very pretty, peaceful inland site is this one
ACSI campsite at Càlig, off the N232. It is set in old orange and olive grove. Beautifully planted and sheltered and quiet. French owned and run.

Lovely amenities and beautiful looking pool.

Camping L’Orangeraie, Càlig on the CV 185 from Benicarlo

Thanks for that! It was on my radar and sounded lovely. However, apparently, the French owners recently sold it to a Spanish gentleman - perhaps last year (2018).

Since then, lots of cabins installed and much less favourable reviews. I read that a lot of the gardens are being stripped out to enlarge the capacity. Sounded as though it's a bit of a building site at the moment, though not sure if that's true?

Many thanks for the suggestion in any case Annie!

Cheers, Mike

Hi Vicky - followed your advice and arrived at Camping Estanyet a couple of hours ago and very pleasant it is too.

Pool, bar and restaurant attractive, loos and showers good and fast free wi-fi!

Oh, and the sea just across the road...

Thanks again for the recommendation. :)

That’s a real shame. Looks like you found a good alternative though :)

It depends of course what time we rise, but the sun isn't getting up too early at this time of year... ;) (y)
