Hi

We have done Aires for a week but fancy a couple of days at a campsite in Portugal. Would be nice to use our bicycles. We can't see one jumping out in the ACSI book or search for sites. Any recommendations for one that will be open now please?

Depends where in Portugal! Not as big as Spain, but...

And what sort of site you like, too - but how about Turiscampo near Lagos? More like a Spanish site for facilities, although you do pay extra on ACSI rate to use the indoor pool.

Could be busy with rallies etc.

We are thinking the South for the warmer weather

We like Camping Albufeira and it has a cycle track into the old town. Its cheap in winter too.

Camping Ria Formosa at Conceicao is quite good for cycling, cycle route to Tavira and through the orange groves the other way. Right by the coastal railway (rail fares 50% discount over 65 need to show passport). Give you a double pitch in the winter.

Apologies to those I have shocked, Lenny, knowing about a prison camp.

Might be worth a look at mikkies place Pêra. If there’s any pitches

Camperstop Messines is at Sao Bartholmeu de Messines inland from Albufeira. Nice walks, owner does trips into town for shopping, really laid back site run by a nice Dutch guy and his wife. Very good price too

Turiscampo is by far the best campsite in the Algarve for facilities etc. If you want lux, that’s the place.
I don’t reccomend Mikkis at all.

If there ever was a campsite that was like a prison camp this is it, stayed once and that was enough. Locked gate and barriers.

We'll be back at Mikki's next month, works for us. Toilets/Showers bit wiffy but seem clean. A fair walk into nearest town, but it's cheap, casual and friendly and not like a prison camp at all. Might try Turiscampo near Lagos but I couldn't get the prices up – about £17 for two with leccy as against a tenner?

It is a nice place, just a shame it’s owned by such horrible obnoxious two faced lying money grabbing selfish rude and cruel people who care nothing for their guests........
Not to mention that the whole place is illegal. As is their business. And yes, steps are being taken by the local council.

More like 20 euros but a great site,2 pools,one covered,gym,spa, nice restaurant and bar..BUSBY.

I imagine Turiscampo is a bit busy this time of year? We pass it on our way to Sagres. Would be tempted to stop, as we hear that Sunita’s Castle is very good, but we prefer our sites to be mostly empty rather than mostly full.

Silly question,Looking at the rates, when paying for a caravan do you still have to pay the car rate too or is the car rate for a second car !!!

That's quite strong, Mikki seemed very nice and helpful. Not sure about the other guy who seems to run the non-electric place at the back. So have you posted regarding this, what is your beef?

its been like that for years Dave. I was down there five years ago and Paul (zepp) one minute it was closing then it was open. We left after having an argument with the owner and so did many others. Shame really because it’s a nice site or could be. I really don’t know how it’s still going.

I think my comment is self explanatory! we lived on there for a year, and once you scratch below the surface, its very different. several full timers have either left or been forced off ( we left) .

There were many incidents which were bad form, including me being assaulted 3 times about which they gave not one shit, ( the other bloke came of worse, I assure you) the final straw for us was when they gave us a permanent pitch, and a contract, then told us ( and many others) it was illegal and we had to move to a ‘touring’ pitch ( which was still illegal) after all the promises, and then within a month they filled all the fulltiming pitches ( which were apparently illegal) with tourers?
I won’t list chapter and verse, but suffice to say I will never set foot there again, nor will many others.

I certainly didn't know that it is illegal, but presumably if it is closed by the authorities it won't be open when we arrive. The full-timers part is around the back and managed by the ex-partner bloke, isn't it, and the section for short timers with leccy are around and in front of the reception and run by Mikki herself? Could that account for the difference in your perception and mine? If we are only there for a days, it could be OK if we are on her section? Or is it so bad we shouldn't even check it out? Thanks for your heads-up tho.

Camping albufuria is cheap for a reason. If it was me I would go turiscampo.

No, if only it were that simple!
they seem to have 9 lives, so if it’s your bag go for it, but haven been bitten, I won’t go there, nor will I ever have a good word to say about it, and if I can discourage folk giving them their money, I will, but it’s an individual choice. Having been treated the way we and many others were, I’m just passing on my experience. At the end of the day, it’s personal choice.
There are much better places than a Dutch conclave which is nothing like portugal.

Turiscampo is excwellent, but busy. Lagos and Praia de Luz are lovely and a big shout out for the Grapevine Bistro at Espiche, some of the best steak we've ever tasted......................
