I have a wide angle reversing camera which came with the vehicle from new fitted by Knaus into the Uconnect Sat Nav system on the Fiat Ducato. I’d like to fit a rear view camera, so I can see the road behind. My first thought was to install a camera near the reversing camera and wire it through independently to the rear view mirror. But what I’d really like to do is replace the existing camera with a double camera and have an ‘either or’ switch fitted rather than it coming on just when reverse gear is selected.

Would there be a way to do this with the existing power and rca video cable or would I still need to run more wiring through from front to back. Any help appreciated.

The set up im familiar with is that each camera needs its own supply and video link..
The twin cameras can use a single cable front to back but they are split at each end to plug into each camera and the monitor...
Usually the monitor provides switching to whatever channel you want to view..
But normally its on permanent rear view and automatically selects the other/reverse channel when you select reverse... that does involve having a trigger signal from the reverse wiring.. which you will have on your existing set up..
It might be easier to just install a new system..does your present monitor support another channel?..

Don’t think the Uconnect supports another video channel. Was thinking of a rocker switch between the camera and the unit. Maybe disconnect the reverse gear connection.

Can I suggest having a chat with dave newell lvs . He's done this for two of mine. He is near Telford so not too far from you. He is also a funster and you will get Funster Discount. He'll be able to go through the options. ?

What about a wireless camera? I have heard reliablity issues but not much wiring needed.

That’s an excellent idea. He’s just down the road in Telford. What did you have done?

Got wireless cameras around my house and they work without issues. I guess it depends on the quality and possible interference.

On our previous motorhome he fitted a combined rear view and reversing camera. Our present one had a reversing one so he added a rear view one. He has carried out other work too e.g. cruise control, (I didn't realise you could retrofit that!) Refillable gas, bathroom tap. Excellent work.

We had fitted a Waeco twin camera system (since ripped out and replaced) but that fed down one waeco type cable. If you have that cable fitted and some MHs do have that factory fitted you could fit the waeco camera and monitor. Not sure you could feed the input into anything else than a waeco monitor. But you could ask Dave Newell to investigate that route.

Thanks. Did he wire them to your existing Sat/Nav/head unit?

Thanks I’ll ask him.

Mirrors work for me. It’s just another distraction. I had a rear pointing camera in a Swift. Not a lot of detail on a small screen and used to flicker something awful at night with changes in street lighting.

I was thinking it would be an advantage to see a car creeping up behind you.
