RAC recovery from Grampian mountains to Southampton.

I called out our long distance driver when I did breakdowns.....we contracted to the major recovers
Family broken down in a Scarborough to go to Inverness.
Driver picked them up, took them to Inverness then turned around and came straight home.
Shortly after that they changed the driving hours rule in line with commercial HGV hours.
Our three taxi drivers (already half way through their shifts) drove us from Glasgow to London.
We arrived in the early hours.
They then turned around and drove back to Glasgow.
1,000 mile round trip and about 20 driving hours each

So now told van will be taken from Teeside to Coventry, then sit in their yard until Monday as the driver is having a day off. Then possible home Monday afternon. Did not realise the RAC was a one man band.

Last August we had a minibus loaded with a 6m canoe trailer, 12 kids and 3 adults lifted from Glasgow to London.

You were lucky! Our school minibus broke down in N France but I was able to make sufficient repairs to get us back to Dover, although it had to be pushed off the ferry at midnight.

I rang RAC who "explained" that the corporate cover which they provided to Norfolk County Council only required them to transfer 5 people. "Do I leave 10 pupils here by themselves while I accompany 4 pupils in a car with a total stranger or should I stay with 9 pupils and allow 5 youngsters to travel with the stranger?"
"Not our problem sir!"

Eventually, at 3am, Dover Port officials found us a minibus belonging to one of their subcontractors who was prepared to allow us to drive back to Norfolk and have it returned on the RAC van once the school bus had been rescued back here.

Gordon

(TRUTH: it was 11 members of staff on a booze cruise so some were suggesting a hotel and catch the train next day BUT the principle was the same and NCC changed their contracts PDQ)
