There are a few on ebay that cost less than a tenner. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which one might be best probably for walks of no more than a couple or 3 hours and preferentially in circles for the Provence area and including the ardeche (if possible)
Or do we just get an OS map of the areas and use TO to point us in the right places.
Down there for a couple of months from start of May

We have lived in the Haute Vienne for over 6 years and walking is our thing.
Most villages in France have two or three marked walks anything from say 5kms up to around 12/16kms. Or as we do call at the Mairie and get a walks carte, sometimes free, area ones with 10 or so walks with map a small charge.

We use a Satmap and have an SD card with the whole of France not a cheap option the Satmap is over £300 and the SD card for France is £200.

A cheap solution is Maps.me on your phone, the mapping is very good has most footpaths. All maps are downloaded so you don't need data & makes Google maps look pathetic. We use it a lot if we haven't got a Satmap of where we are.
If using any form of electronic mapping always take a power block with you so you can charge the device if needed

Have got maps.me and have recently doubled up on the charger.
Completely and utterly agree with you about its usefulness.
Unfortunately for what we need in planning a walk you have to zoom too far in to see the footpaths as to where they go and no idea of contours and no history orfprevious persons.
However there is no chance i was going to go on one of these walks without it and the charger.
I also managed to download all the aires, france passion, beautiful villages and a few campsites of interest and even managed to transfer them via bluetooth onto my new phone.
Thinking of keeping my old phone just for maps.me in the van as a secondary satnav.
I think i have the capability of sending them via whattsapp or email if interested. They transfer over a msall amount of data on the aires such as the cost, facilities and satnav info to put into vehicle satnav if interested.
