The motorhome that we’ve put a deposit on is being prepared for pick up at the end of the month, when I was giving it the once over I noticed a line on each of the plastic side windows on the near side, it looks like it’s the original protection film that has never been removed properly and looks to be well and truly part of the windows due to it being in place for so long.
Obviously this can’t be scraped off as it will damage the windows and I think the guy selling it really doesn’t quite know how best to do it either, has anyone had to do this before? my last m home I used a DA polisher using cutting compound first then polish and wax with great success to remove all the scratches, not sure if this would work without just clogging the polishing pad up.
Any ideas welcome please or even better a solution that I can forward on to him.

cheers
Mark

Are you absolutely certain it is the protective film? I think peeling it off is the only solution, start at an edge. I doubt you can remove it by polishing, I expect it will roll into little beads and leave things worse than they are now.

Any photo of the problem would help too, have you priced replacements in your negotiations?

No that’s what will be a discussion if it can’t be removed, to be fair it v difficult to see, it’s only due to a fine layer of dust settling on it that I noticed it, no photos sorry.

Ask the seller to remove it before you collect..... (y)
I think that’s the problem Mo, I think the film has been on that long it’s well and truly welded on, as I couldn’t reach to get a proper look, it seems to be half way down each window for the full length, wish I’d managed to get pics now 🥲

Heat carefully with hairdryer and peel off gently? Works with old stickers etc. 🤔

Can be a problem if its been on too long. My 3 year old car still had the protective plastic on bits of the dashboard, luckily it came off cleanly.

Would silicone help it to unstick I wonder.

I would certainly argue the toss with him and say you want it off...

Think, after you have had it awhile and it get`s scratched, you wont be able to buff it out...

It`s your hard earned cash... so get it right... good luck....(y)

If I were you'd I'd contact the window manufacturer's technical department, tell them the suspected problem and ask if they can confirm how best to remove the PE film which appears to have bonded itself to the polycarbonate glazing. On a more positive note, it is highly unlikely to have been a protective film with a solvent-based adhesive. Solvents and polycarbonate sheet don't mix and there would be a very high risk of crazing appearing if it were solvent-based. It is more likely to be an aqueous emulsion used to coat the protective film (if there is any coating on it).

Very frustrating to have to try and remove it successfully if it has been exposed to prolonged sunlight and solar heating though. Keep us informed as to how this pans out for you.

jongood maybe me being dense but not sure what you mean by blades?
I'm fairly certain that on the seitz ones the plastic bit slides out and I think you can get the pane bit. Here's a rando link that may or may not help :)

To me it sounds as if the film has been removed leaving a fine dirty edge of adhesive. I would test this with a cotton bud damped with a little white spirit and try just a tiny area. My guess is it will disappear quickly. If that works do the whole strip / line and clean the whole window with Plexus aircraft plastic cleaner.
