HI

I want to mount my Poynting antenna on the roof of my PVC. The easiest idea would be a magnetic base which I could deploy through the roof light .

My question is: Would the fairly strong magnet/s have an adverse effect on the antenna's performance?

Thanks Lenny, email just sent. I think the magnets will be OK, but you never know with RF and the like.

Would suggest something extremely strong as I'll be around to pinch it 'cause that ratfink Lenny HB refuses to remove his from the bus as I don't want an auld Hymer hinging off it! :whistle2: 😝:giggle:

You wouldn't be able to nick it as there are two strong coax cables running into the van, so not just relying on the magnets. Anyway, you would need to find me first.
Blooming Scots, anything not bolted down is fare game:p:p Best keep a lookout Lenny.

Hi Lenny

Reply received this morning, that's good service. They suggested keeping any magnets out of receiving area and as I will be mounting it above a magnetic base it will be good.

Quick update.
I made up a simple vertical stand for the Poynting antenna, by making a triangular base and a 500mm length of broom handle. To the base I fixed three strong magnets. As the antenna weighs next to nothing, this should suffice.
I popped it onto the PVC roof and ran the cables into the vehicle.
Being out in the sticks we do not enjoy a very good phone signal, so the 5577 showed 3G and a couple of bars.
I connected the antenna and got a bit better signal. Note that in my yard there are buildings higher than the antenna all round.
To test the antenna, I put the 5577 into the motorhome oven without connecting the cables. As you would expect, no signal at all.
I then connected the cables and placed into the oven, full 3G signal.
I will carry out further tests when we are out and about, but it looks good on first trial.
