Quick question on the above.I realise it’s late in the day. Is it possible to buy a piece of land(just farming or agricultural)in Portugal and get this temporary residence before the b word becomes reality?

B became reality at the end of last year. At present we are in the transition period. Missed the boat.

Withdrawal Agreement allows you to establish residence up until Dec this year, all paperwork needs to be filled in and completed by June next year. I am no expert on the question of land and residency, look up Brits in Europe website they have a great deal of information, if you need specific advice pay the fee and join.

I think temporary residency is possible at any time but may be more complicated when the transition period is over if not already, not sure on that one.

This may help

Hi, I have it, it is called the Certificate of Registration of a Citizen of the Union of Europe. As long as you are in PT before Dec 31st , under the withdrawal act (unless Boris cancels it, if he can??) you have until June next year to claim it.
You don't need to buy any property. I got mine by going to the town hall in June and showing 3 months of motorhome park receipts. I know lots of people who done that at different town halls in the Algarve. Some people have even got it showing 2 days Airbnb receipts.
The trouble in PT is that the town halls who dish out this cert are all different. Some are fussier than others. Some town halls want different things.

I tried last year Feb 2019 and could not get it as was refused on the last hurdle by the SAF as they would not allow campsite resident!!!!!

Well you were unlucky. I asked both SEF and the British FCO. They both said yes. SEF at Castelo Branco was where I went and asked. The head man said it was ok and if I had any problems to tell the local Camara to phone . British FCO said to email them back if I had trouble. I got mine at Tavira Camara as have lots of people. Portimao are very easy as well. I have heard of people having trouble up north and central but everyone I know, about 8 or so got theirs in Algarve. If you don't believe me I can scan you my CRUE.

We got ours in Tavira using campsite address, we have a long term arrangement but no contract, needed 2 local residents to sign forms, stamped by local Mayor in Cabanas and then an office in Tavira, what are SEF or SAF, could have been that.

SEF is the Immigration "Police" You don't see them until you need the five year renewal. I had a bit of trouble with a town hall in central in Feb, that's why I went to ask SEF. I went to Tavira in March for my birthday and got stuck for lockdown so just went to the town hall there, didn't even need to get the form signed by 2 people, but someone else went to the same office 2 days later and had to get 2 people to sign her form. No problem though.

It is obviously different rules in Different locations !!!!!!! I tried fir mine in Olhao in Algarve, And previous campsite residents actually got there’s up until 31st Dec 2018 then SAF changed the rules after that and refused me in Feb 2019, but looks like changed again !!!!!!!! So maybe I will try again this year !!!!!!! :-)

I have a place in Tavira and I was going to do the residency in November but as yet I have been unable to as I got stuck in the UK.
Do you remember which department it was that you went to, and, whether you have to prebook an appointment.
Cheers
Another Paul

All has changed now since the complete Brexit. Before 31/12/2020 it was the Camara (town hall). Now S E F.

I thought they extended it to end June to be able to apply?
If you still remember can you tell me the name of the department and if you prebook for an appointment?
I will then check with them if its the camara or SEF route
Cheers
BTW As its raining and gales here, whats the weather like at the moment in Tavira
