I want to buy a small portable power bank so that when I am wandering out and about I can charge my iPhone - something that would do 2 or 3 charges. I am away from EH most of the time. When the power bank goes flat can it be recharged via the 12v in my van which has solar or do they need mains power? Thanks

We have got 4 of them. Havent spent more than 20 quid on each and can get a good 2 to 3 full charges out of each one for a mobile phone.
We just stuff them in different places. 1 in the motorbike 1 in the car and 2 in the motorhome.

These ones popped up on a MyMemory email this morning as cheap as chips at £6.99 for a 4000mah battery bank.

Great - Thanks for your replies!

Is it the case - the bigger the mAh the more charges I would get?

Yes that's right. There is a limit to the size you can take on an aircraft, it's 100Wh, equivalent to about 26000mAh, so very few are bigger than that. That's about the size and weight of a small book. I have one about 10000Ah that is a bit easier to carry round in my pocket. Some of them have rectangular USB Type A output and micro-USB input. Some have USB-C input and output. Some have both. Try to get one with QuickCharge 3.0 or better (QC3) if you have a modern smartphone, it will charge faster.

Ankor are a good reliable make have a look on amazon.
20000mA will recharge the average phone at least 3 or more times.
Mine has 3 USB ports to recharge 3 devices.
I’ve had one for years now
They recharge by usb.
It’s also allowed on an aeroplanes

I've had an Anker Powercore for a few years. Was ideal when I was stuck in tents without any power. Even with the van it's great. I often found myself recharging not only the phone, but Kindle and indeed a lot of things that run off USB.

It recharges from USB. Can take some time if the USB port itself is low powered.

Not as good for shoving in a pocket out and about, but some of the modern jump start packs also give a USB output for charging. Useful for both charging your phone and getting your vehicle to start if the battery is dead - mine is small and light enough to shove in a bicycle/motorbike pannier, but I wouldn't want to put it in my jacket pocket for a long walk.

In which case why is the power bank needed, as the iPhone can be charged direct from those sources?

Am I missing something?

The powerbank is usually small enough so it can be stuffed into a pocket or whatever when out and about. You won't always have your motorhome with you. Even with motorhome, the powerbank is a useful backup when off grid if I need to save on the habitation battery use.

If you stay near your MH most of the day, no problem. But if you go out on bikes/bus early, using the phone as a satnav, taking photos and videos, looking up interesting places etc, and don't get back until late in the day, maybe stopping in a restaurant/ bar, a modern smartphone is not going to last with just its internal battery.

We used a small powerpack while at Chester and no hook up. Can't remember the name and it is quite slow at charging apple stuff, but that might have been because i was using a non apple lead. It's not nearly as good as the one i bought for £8 at one of the shows, unfortunately i left that on the table of the motorhome and manage to fry it.

Sorry, did not conceive of so much use - my phone is used about twice a week.

We use one of these it fits in back pack or pocket but isn't tiny. I've tried a one from Lidl it was tish and broke.
This charges my phone quicker than the MH 12v outlet.

Look at the Anker range. Very good quality. I have a few. They do one the size of a disposable gas lighter that will give one charge.
