The plastic coating on my Hymer B544 bumper, headlight surrounds and awning is perishing and flaking off, leaving the perfectly sound but different coloured plastic base exposed. Does anyone know of, or have experience of, repairing this sort of damage? The van is 14 years old and the damage is cosmetic but unsightly.

We had the same happen on the bumper of our previous Hymer. The garage we took the van to was:

SOS Body works, Keynsham, Bristol.

A long way for you to come, but they did a brilliant job. A small company who were very good. If you need details, just send me a PM.

You might think that’s a long way to come, but I’ve known Funsters who’ve had the same job done in Morocco!

Hi, thanks for a very quick reply! If I have to, I will have it done professionally as the van is otherwise in excellent condition, but with all this time on my hands I’m hoping someone, somewhere has done a DIY repair ?. It would get me out of painting the outside of the house! If no success I will pm you, best regards, Gary, Penryn, Cornwall

Easy to diy, there’s a paint mixer in illogan that will mix up some paint cans with their spectrometer. A few can of lacquer and an assortment of wet&dry... fairly easy to take the bumper and light surrounds off and repaint them.. all for less then £100

When it all opens up again I’ll give you a hand if you like, I have experience...?

that sounds like the sort of reply I was hoping for! Thank you and I will be in touch! Cheers, Gary

I thought you lived over shortlanesend area Gary..? Now in penryn..?

Garry, carharrack..??

Used to live in Probus and still ride my bike with Probus Pedallers (before the lockdown). Moved to Rame Cross, Penryn, 2 years ago.

On our first van we had something similar and i bought a rubber paint which comes in aerosol format and i think it was about a tenner a tin.
The trick was to make sure it was all sanded down and then cover as if you would for painting.
Ended up being a very good job and made the van look a whole smarter.
Dont know how long it lasted as i tarted her up to sell her, but i suspect it did last and i was honest when selling it.

This sort of stuff

As others have said it`s a very common problem. I removed my front bumper and took it to a body shop who did an excellent job.
You`ll need to remove as much of the old laquer as possible. The man told me it`d happened because they skimped on primer in the factory. It`ll need lots of sanding and is much easier to do with bumper removed and fittings taken off.

Thank you. By coincidence my youngest brother manages a body shop in West Yorkshire (Mastercars). That’s a long way from where we live now but we do visit family up there several times a year, so when we get past Coronavirus I will ask him to do the work, but in the meantime I have plenty of time to do the prep work at least.

Would bead blasting it give a better finish ready for new coats. They use different stuff for more or less harsh blast.

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to read and reply to my question - you’ve given me lots of good advice and plenty of options and have proved once again what a fantastic resource MHF is, unmatched anywhere.

By the way, whilst the bumper was off, I took the opportunity to scrape a bit of rust off the front crossmember under the radiator, red oxide and hammerite paint.

It looks a lovely van. We had the 2007 B564. As many Funsters know, it very near broke Cliff’s heart to sell it!
