Pirelli v Michelin v Continental tyres.

Looking at the EU ratings for 215/70 R15 C 109 tyres the Pirelli Carrier Camper tyres seem a better bet than the Michelin or Continental.

The Pirelli seems to be in the middle on price but ahead on efficiency and wet performance.
I appreciate they are basically summer tyres which suits me.

How come most threads seem to rotate around the Michelin and Continental.

Am I missing something?

I need to replace all five tyres on my van.

Because that is what Fiat fit to camping Chasis as standard.
I wouldn't fit Michelin camping tyres, hard noisy ride very poor grip and the wear rate is quite high.
When I change my tyres later this year I'm going to fit winter van tyres.

Call me a tightwad Tyke but don't subscribe to that "Camper" type mullarkey.

We are on oversized (225 not 215) van tyres)
The 'van isn't sat for long periods of inactivity and the efficiency and wet weather performance is as good or better than the usual suspects.

I've got Continental Vanco Four Season tyres and two of them have done 46,000 miles. They were on the back originally and have spent a year on the front after I replaced the front ones last year. I'm going to replace them in a month or so and will go with Continental again, primarily because they give very good advice on inflation pressures and we get a much more comfortable ride.

Hankook get good reports and are worth considering. They came top in one German test I've seen.

But there are other criteria which need to be considered, particularly grip. If you go to rallies in fields or use lots of CLs then Continental may not be the best from what I've read on here. This isn't a consideration for me but may be for others.

Ours is a 3.5t van with 16" wheels and doesn't need camper tyres but if you are more heavily laden, especially with 15" tyres, camper tyres may be worth considering.

Just checked my handbook, it states van should be on 215/70 R15 XC 'Camping' tyres at 5 bar, with a note that it should have metal valves. Had not noticed the metalic valves bit before. Twenty year old van actually has ten year old Michelin Agilis 205/70 R15 tyres with rubber valves fitted at present.

Definitely leaning towards the Pirelli at the moment, I do camp on grass fields so may need to consider that.

You can get high pressure rubber valves, they have a brass insert. Ordinary rubber valves have a max pressure of 65 psi.

Slight word of caution re anyone who goes down the "overwidth" route to get more load flexibility on the rear axle.
By going for a wider tyre with same percentage height ie 225x70 as opposed to 215x70 the tyre has a slightly longer circumference.
That in turn (no pun intended) means your speedo on a Fiat becomes nearly exactly accurate, not helpful with regard to speed cameras (less margin for error).
In addition the odometer becomes more pessimistic meaning the mpg also becomes more accurate ie less.
You win some and lose some.

I'm looking at these too as the ratings do look better than the Continental Vanco Campers that are the original tyres on our van and which need replacing. Has anyone any experience of the Pirellis?

Ive just had fitted 4 x Toyo Observe Van Winter tyres (225/70 R15) for £79 each all in and will keep them on all year round. Thanks to EuroTrotters for the tip. B rating in the wet at 72db and will probably perform very well in mud/wet grass.

I’m having the same fitted shortly but the 215, £85 each I’ve been quoted, again just a local tyre place.
