Dealer phones me about picking up our new to us van on Saturday he wants us to pay now, not keen so l say will pay Saturday via debit card, he says they don't take dB cards as payment anymore and can't accept bank transfer on weekends as accounts dept only work week days so he can't confirm payment.

I want to see the van before paying for it to make they have done what the said they would do, I feel that knowing we haven't paid will concentrate their minds on getting it right for us to pick up

After a bit of a chat we decided to pick up next Tuesday. Think he's a bit peeved.

I smell something fishy there? Why would they not accept a debit card payment?

Did he say why they wouldn't accept debit card for payment, my understanding is that it is better for the dealer than a bank transfer.

I wouldn't pay in advance either, I did a bank transfer for our Carthago after we'd been able to check it over. They may not like debit card simply because if there are issues with the card then the payment won't go through, a dealer we bought a Rimor from told me they'd had a chap travel from Scotland down to their premises near Nottingham to pick up his new MH but his card wouldn't work and he had jump through loads of hoops to get the bank to make the payment for him.

Oh, make sure you take all your bank account security info with you, ie telephone password, memorable word etc, so that if you do get a call from them to check it's legit you can get through the security checks!

We paid 20 grand for our new van on credit card payments without any problems from the dealer
Are you sure it was a credit card? We've been able to pay a chunk on one before but never that much! Of course we made sure it was our cashback card that paid us 1% on payments! :giggle:

Works both ways. Goods are handed over when payment clears.
I couldn't drive My camper home until the sellers's bank said that the payment was clear.
I had to wait an hour but that was understandable.

Credit cards are usually charged on a %.
Debit cards are a fixed fee. I seem to recall I used to get charged a fixed 60p per transaction.
We preferred debit cards on high value items.

I am sure that this is not the reason why they are refusing a debit card transaction. Problem with the van causing a risk of a chargeback however does jump to the front of my mind?
A bank transfer cannot be clawed back, a debit card transaction can in some circumstances.

It does make me slightly suspicious of them with everything else you said olley so you are doing the right thing in inspecting it first.

debt card costs them money

This is true but normally only .25% on a debit card depending who the dealer uses to handle the transactions, if its direct to a bank it can be a fixed charge which could be minimal

If your a novice at this sort of thing
View the van and all ok
Go to your bank local branch and get them to do transfer over counter and its instant
Go back to dealer drive away

Paid for some double glazed windows on debit card last year, bloke said when I went back to order more it had cost him £500 in charges!!
Did bank transfer for the others.

We're collecting our van on Saturday too! I'm planning on paying by debit card and have already contacted the bank to make sure there's no limit on debit card transactions. I also asked if it was possible to put a note on the account to say what was going to happen, but apparently there's no provision for this.

Definitely - Tesco credit cards - you get Eurotunnel points as a bonus you know. I was worried because last year motorhome companies where going under on a regular basis. They didn't bat an eyelid. 10 grand at order and 10 grand when we picked it up.
