We left France on the 10th, we had a house in France and sold in March and decided not to apply for CDS as we it would expire after 6 months out of the country, which was perfectly fine as applications were extended to September. Anyway our passports were stamped on exit, of course there was no entry stamps as we have been there a couple of years. What i want to understand is what does the exit stamp signify ? do i have to earn my next 90 days by being out of schengen for 90 days ? I have googls but cannot find definitive info

I suspect the exit stamp only has meaning if there is a preceding entry stamp, thereby enabling you and others to calculate the duration of your stay.

Your personal circumstances were exceptional insofar as you didn't get an entry stamp. I suspect you can disregard the exit stamp and begin your 'first' 90 days whenever it suits you.

Just a opinion though.

Depends on the port of entry and exit, not all are yet on the digital reader and recording system, thus stamps are used or the system may have been down at that time.
I suspect you may find out the hard way should you transgress the 90 day in 180 day cycle.

My experience, or rather that of my wife and friends, is ports of entry to France such as Dover are stamping UK passports willy nilly, regardless of the rules.

i say this because these people all have french residency and under the Withdrawal Agreement their passports should NOT be stamped, but stamped they were. Hence my assertion the French border staff stamp passports with no regard to the rules.

Irrelevant to the OP post maybe, but rant over, its sort of linked. 😆

Did they offer the residencia card first & on its own?
