I applied, online, for my passport renewal and the timeline was as follows :-

Friday 17 June Application made
Friday 17 June email from Passport Office to say Application received.

Saturday 18 June Old passport sent off
Saturday 18 June email from Passport Office asking me to return old passport.

Wednesday 22 June email from Passport Office to say Old Passport received

Saturday 25th June email from Passport Office to say Application approved

Monday 27th June email from Passport Office to say New Passport Printed

Tuesday 28th June 9am Passport delivered!!!

My reason for posting this is because I was concerned, given the Press coverage there's been about this, that my passport would not be returned during our 90 day stay in the UK, before our planned return to Portugal in September.

There may be other Funsters in the same boat. So take hope.

This is on top of having my new (over 70s) Driving Licence renewed in under 5 days last week. (It was straight application - no medical issues.)

And yet I watched an MP on TV yesterday asking what more could be done to help 42 constituents who had written to him about the time taken to issue a new passport over the last month alone.

Have the Passport Office (and the courier they use) got their act together? It LOOKS as if they have. My wife's theory is that all those passports that were supposed to be in cages in an inaccessible corner of the Office are still there - and us newbies are being dealt with first. But she's a cynic:giggle:

So that's two less things to worry about - now all I have to do is update my new passport number to our Card Protection Policy, The Ferry Company, ACSI, ...........

:giggle:

I renewed my passport online in January this year, it was all sorted within a couple of weeks. The hardest part was getting an online photo that the passport office would accept.

Thanks spike, mine is due for renewal and your post is reassuring. I must sit down later and get the process started.(y)

So pleased to hear a bit of good news and good of you to post your experience, sadly, there are these unfortunate people still waiting and there has to be a reason for it, therefore,l don’t think your wife’s far off the mark. Lost in the system of in someone’s bedroom or under the ironing board WFH.

Likewise - tried it with camera and smartphone but couldn't get rid of the shadow.

Bit the bullet, popped in to my nearest Timsons where the very efficient man took the snaps, told us that they had been accepted by the Passport Office and gave us a reference code to include in our online application.

All worked very smoothly - and we got 4 copies of our mugshots to boot!

I Haven't got the receipt to hand - but I think it was £12.99 - but whatever it was I thought it was well worth it to know, in advance of the application, that there wouldn't be a problem of the photo being rejected.

A report recently stated that is what is happening.
Ours took 6 weeks start to finish. No tracking on new ones but old ones being returned had tracking and required a signature?

For returning the old one I was given the option of paying an extra £5 or thereabouts for the tracked service. As I might need proof of where I've been visiting over the years I chose that.

The Radio 4 programme "You & Yours" did a piece about passports today (at 12:45 if you want to listen on BBC Sounds).

They interviewed a journalist who's been covering this issue and she said that it appeared that the Passport Office weren't processing applications in date order.

I think this will mean that the P/O will be able to point to a lowering of the "average" (mode) waiting time.

The following points were made during the item :-
  1. P/O says 90% are being returned within 6 weeks
  2. If you've been waiting more than 6 weeks, and you have proof that you are travelling within 2 weeks, you can contact your MP (who has a direct line to the P/O) and they will expedite it.
  3. If you have proof that you are travelling withing 24 to 48 hrs you can go to ANY of the P/Os and get them to expedite it
  4. If you have been waiting more than 10 weeks you can pay for an upgrade and they will expedite it. (Cheek!!)
I assume that with 2,3 & 4 you still have to provide a photo and provide copies of any necessary documents etc - on the basis that they won't be able to find your original physical application (if it's in a cage over against the wall!) I suppose they can find an online application quite quickly if you have the reference number?

Anyroadup - good luck to any Funsters who are still waiting.

P.S. Only 69 days before they let us back in/use ours again!

You have been listening to those pesky reporters again eh. and you believe them ????

Married friends of ours who live in Durham got their passports back this week in less than a week. One done at Bootle the other in Peterborough.
Another friend from Glasgow had been waiting weeks for his passport from Durham and finally travelled there to get it done under the 24/48 hour rule.

I wrote "They interviewed a journalist who's been covering this issue and she said that it appeared that the Passport Office weren't processing applications in date order".

I also wrote, in the piece that started this thread, "My wife's theory is that all those passports that were supposed to be in cages in an inaccessible corner of the Office are still there - and us newbies are being dealt with first. But she's a cynic ":giggle:

(You may have seen the undercover documentary where P/O staff discussed these cages.)

.Anyone who does not believe that passports are being processed out of date order might want to put forward another explanation as to why some recent passport applications have been returned in as little as 10 days while others have been waiting for considerably longer.

My explanation follows the same reasoning as to why my driving licence was renewed in 5 days while others have been waiting several months. If the application is straightforward, and can be checked automatically/digitally, it's more likely to be processed faster than if human interaction is involved - to check e.g. medical issues/name or address changes.

But returning to your question. Most of the information we receive about current affairs, whether on TV, Radio, the press or the internet is brought to us by journalists. I understand that some people nowadays get most of their information from social media. Given the choice I know which source I would, generally, trust.

But whether I believe the journalist, or not, isn't important. I started this spread to try to reassure Funsters who are/were concerned about applying for a passport and another thread about Driving Licences (as I was) - so I shan't be responding further as I don't want the thread to be diverted away from the original topic.

My son's kids needed new passports (they are both 8 years old) Sent off at same time. They were dealt with by different offices, and one was received well before the other. I think they have both returned now.

Eldest grandaughter now over 30, applied for first passport in her own name. She hasn't been abroad as an adult and knew she'd have difficulty - our eldest, her mum, had her when she was a teenager so her birth was registered with her single surname. She subsequently met and married the same bloke she's still married to so to make schools, doctors etc easier, with the 2 kids she had with her husband, statutorily declared S's last name to be her husband and hers. That was OK until S decided she didn't want her stepdad's name, so she did the same as her mum and changed it back again. Passport Office wouldn't recognise the 2nd statutory declaration so asked for her mum's ID - so S told them her mum's current passport number - but that isn't the same surname - if she's your mother why don't you have the same surname? So her mum had to supply both HER birth cert and her marriage cert to them. What a flippin palaver!

Meanwhile, S was getting rather twitchy to say the least - but it did eventually get sorted with a week to spare.

My sister and BIL decided to renew their passports online. Both done at the same time, one processed in Peterborough, other processed in Glasgow (they live in Nottingham). BIL stated his name was Chris and it was queried as his given name is Christopher. Sister received hers in just over a week. BIL had the hassle of sorting it our,, eventually managed to phone and it was then sorted out verbally. His took one month so maybe there are reasons people are waiting some time for thiers.
