Just read on Facebook of a lady flying to Spain. Start date on Passport 30 July 2011,, Expiery date Feb something 2022. She had renewed before old one expired. According to border control because we are no longer in EU the passport only has 10 years from starting date. She was refused entry onto the flight. What a bummer.Be warned.BUSBY.

Just noticed this was mentioned on a previous post.BUSBY.

I’ve got 10 years 9 months on mine so will need to renew with 9months left if going abroad.

The rules are tight now 6 months needed from the date of entry to EU so really a passport only lasts 9 years and 6 months. I haven't renewed mine, it ran out last year, I intend to renew it next spring.

Checked mine couple of weeks ago and very close ie a couple of days to the six month cut off. Sent for new one returned in a week. Posted at local post office depot at 1630 got text at 0800 next morning they already had it. Very good service.

Does anyone know, how far in advance of the expiry date you can apply?

One of ours expires next September but is 10 years old in January.

Now you can only get 10 years from the date you apply, and in reality it only lasts 9 and a half years.

There is a government passport expiry checking webpage for EU travel.

Checked my wife's and it expired in May!
Easy renewal online with tracking.
Most difficult job was taking the new photo, not the other half's favourite after doing that.

The cost of a passport is not great, over 10 years less, than £10 a year, however if like us both run out together, getting 2 passports doesn't seem so cheap 🙂

UK passport costs £75.50 or £85.
£7.55 or £8.50 a year.
70p a month.
Not worth stressing about losing a few months.

Agreed but wondering if there is a limit to how early you can apply? Over e year in advance seems too much but the actual date is then closing in. I can't find anything in the rather good guidance.

You can apply at any time, but the new passport will only have 10 years on it.

Because you have to surrender your old passport to get the new one you’d be able to replace one as soon as you wanted.

Finding a convenient time to replace a current passport for a frequent traveler about 9months away from it’s expiry should work.

I would normally agree but the expiry date Sept 2022 is no longer relevant for travel to the EU as they allegedly want 10 years from the issue date which is Jan 2022.

I am wondering if this is fact or another 'Ham Sandwich' scare story? We travelled though UK border control last week with a very amiable chap who had a good look at the passports and I would have expected him to say something.

It seems to have been well reported but I don't remember seeing anything official.

I wouldn't really expect a UK border force operative to comment on or even know the rules applied in the EU.

Which means it is now nearly useless for entry in to the EU

They have no interest in the length of expiry left on your passport. Only that it is valid at that point. Leaving & entering the eu is another matter

Did mine last night, getting the photo right was the hardest bit by far! (shadows/smiling/cross eyed etc)

Ours are almost identical dates, I renewed online a couple of days ago.
I think the people getting turned away at present are at the airport where airlines have a responsibility to check. Not necessarily being turned away by border control.
I believe you are allowed to go to EU with 3 months left before 10 years after date of issue however some airlines saying 6 months.

My parents refused to renew theirs back when they turned 70 as they said they would not get the full 10 years use out of them so waste their money.

They turned 90 earlier this year. So cross as Mum would have loved a cruise (we would have done a 3 or 5 day taster) and Dad could have slept all day as he usually does but been waited on hand and foot. Such a waste ...... So even if the passport was £100 and they only used it once it was only an extra £100 (each) to add to the holiday cost which is peanuts in the overall scheme. And then there is still the issue of identity proof now they don't have either passport and my Dad doesn't have a driving license.

I even offered to pay for holiday and passport if they covered insurance but was told they would hate a cruise having been on a cross channel ferry and been sick :(

Just renewed both our passports as I realised they would expire soon because of the six month rule and they were renewed early last time. Lost nearly 11 months from what I thought we had left. Oh well, it’s only a few quid!
For passport photos I would recommend going to Timpsons rather than faff about trying to get it right yourself. Very quick and efficient and they upload them to the Passport Office website and get them checked and authorised. you also get four hard copies plus digital copies on a memory stick.

Richard.

Commenting to bump this again after just reading a post on FB from a couple planning a surprise visit to friends in Spain, who were turned back at the border because one of their passports had a 30 July 2011 issue date and an April 22 expiring date and so had, under the new rules, effectively expired.

Double check on the Gov website as mentioned in several posts above, but also shown here again: https://www.gov.uk/check-a-passport-travel-europe
