Touring France for 5 weeks in the summer with 17 & 15 year old. 17 year old loves it, 15 year old didn't want to come but managed to talk him round getting him a tent so he has his own space - moans about the snoring in the van!! Only have a couple of sites booked one being in the Dordogne which we leave a week before we are due back home. Thinking about getting flights for the kids as seem pretty cheap so they don't have the long journey home and we can have a taste of retirement living.... nice. Before I take this any further I was just wondering if anyone has parked their van at / near to the airport. We have a dog so we won't be able to both go with the kids. They haven't flown before (though daughter off to CERN later this month with school so will be her first ever flight) so would be important to make sure they are checked in OK and a relative would pick them up from our local airport near home. Hubby would go with them for checkin as he's a frequent traveller (again I'm inexperienced, flew once as a teenager!) much to my shame he's also the van driver... they wouldn't have to take any luggage so no hassle there.
Any thoughts would be welcome....

What happens when you get to the Channel (ferry or tunnel) with 2 booked passengers missing

You could park the van at the nearby municiple campsite, cheaper than parking charges I expect. Haven't flown from there for a decade though, it was just a few tin sheds then. Taxi wouldn't be too dear from there.

Presume I could just amend booking online - would check with customer services before we left home.

That maybe the one I saw - about 5km away? I'm sort of hoping its quite a small setup (the airport) - neither kids are keen on mega busy areas - unless its a theme park then that's fine of course.

Decathlon is within crawling distance if you get your timings right

I used to fly to and from Bergerac on a regular basis to visit my parents. Things may have changed in the last 10 years since the last time I was there but parking was ad hoc with a small tarmac area and excess cars spilling onto some dirt ground adjacent. No barriers or restrictions as far as i remember.
It's a very small airport that you walk across the apron to get on the plane.

You could phone and ask. The campsite I'm talking about is actually in Bergerac town. I assumed you wanted to park for longer. It's a good tip though, they do charge alot at airports, the van would be safer than outside a supermarket, the campsite owners will keep an eye open if you ask.

All good info and food for thought thank you.

I picked some friends up from there in the summer pre-Covid. Most of the parking is covered, but there is an area to the SE of the small eastern block that has a few open air spaces, but with a 2.8m height barrier. I remember that the locals seem to have a problem with inconsiderate parking, and have, in an untypical French fashion, put barriers up even in areas of the verge you could get two wheels on.

My solution was to go into the car hire area, explain the problem, promising to be no more than 20 minutes, and was cheerfully let into their area.

A lot will depend on time of day, and the day of the week. Check the density of flights to and from the UK, almost every passenger is likely to be being met/delivered by Brits with homes in the area.

Edit... Just had a look on Goomaps, and there appears to be an area that looks like a contractor's storage area - just before the airport on the right. Entry from the west looks well used, but if one person was left in the van I'm sure things would be OK parked to the East of the gates for a short while.

Love to know how you get on.

We are just over 3m high with air con unit! The flight I'm looking at is just after 5pm on a Thursday so maybe? less busy than a weekend. I've just been on their website and there is the option for an online conversation - may just see what they say. I've also seen a YouTube video (well photo stills to music) but that was from 2011, looks very low key, ideal really.

Just looked at the prices does not look too bad but was not aware of the height problems.

Bergerac campsite is no longer a municipal one, and has only just reopened (Easter) with new young, and very friendly couple running it. I’m sure they would be happy to assist you if you required a period of parking.

Dogs are accepted everywhere so it shouldn't be a problem.

same as when you have to add one on. just inform them.

Yes I thought the prices were ok.

Do you have the name of the campsite at all? Thank you.

I gather you used to be able to park vans there, they now have solar panels, good for parking but they have also put a hight limit, i have just had a look on google street view and cannot see anything to say how high the barrier is, i am guessing a couple of meters.

I used the coach car park at

Monbazillac it's 10 mins from the airport. They allow motorhomes to stay there as an unofficial aire.

There was an allowance of minutes at Bergerac airport where you could park without cost. Give them a call or just go there and see. It's a rather small airport compared with Bordeaux.

Well managed to get the kids off yesterday from Bergerac airport. In the end we just pulled up in the area by the car hire parking. I took the kids off to departures, hung around outside until through security and then we stayed in/out of van for a couple of hours to watch them take off - quite an emotional ‘Mummy moment’ who’s apron strings are only just starting to stretch.
We decided to stay on at one of our favourite sites so by the time we’d driven back they were only 5mins from landing at East Midlands. They were more than happy to be home with Domino’s, WiFi and Disney+.
All’s well that ends well.

What site are you on? We are heading that way in a couple of weeks, and after a few days pitched in a friends garden near Duras we will be looking for somewhere to relax and recharge our batteries after a bit of a turbulent year so far.

We are at Bel Ombrage Saint Cybranet but think it closes early September but if one of the last in you are almost guaranteed a riverside pitch, that’s how we found it a few years ago. It’s tranquil and beautiful.

Looks lovely, but we aren't moving on until mid week, after it closes. Maybe another time. I'll keep looking for a site to relax.

Glad it all worked out for you.
