Whatever happened to the National Trust considering allowing overnight stays on their properties? I filled in a survey years ago and not heard anything since. Does anyone know if it is still under debate?

Not a 'property' per se, but they have an ongoing experiment at their Aira Force car park on the shores of Ullswater, Lake District.

£10 per night.

I haven't stayed at one but we are heading over to Patterdale next week and I've just tried the pay by phone app for the car park namwaldog linked above and they are still accepting over night stays at that (NT) car park

Despite their encouraging words, I’m afraid they’ve done almost nothing about it. The idea was to open some of their normal car parks (which are empty overnight) as aires for members with self-contained motorhomes. We were willing to pay an annual supplementary fee for this option. What they’ve done in reality is just brought in charges in addition to membership fees in a tiny number of locations.

Until we have a proper certification scheme for self-contained motorhomes here, à la New Zealand, nothing will happen. It’s so dull and short-sighted. Places like France are light-years ahead of the U.K. in catering for motorhomes.

Yup, the way I see it is that half of the problem up here in Northumberland is that certain smaller vans aren't actually self contained as required by the stipulated overnight rules but they "tick" the confirmation box on the online booking stating that they are, then the next thing you see is them walking off into the dunes with toilet roll/wet wipes in hand.

I'm lead to believe that similar has just closed, or at least suspended Helmsley aire

Totally agree about the non self-contained campervans, as i see it any vehicle designed for sleeping and advertised as " giving you freedom" that is not equipped with toilet and washing facilities is not fit for purpose !!
