At the beginning of May I will be travelling from Hampshire to Glencoe and then on to do some of the NC500 route. I will need to stop overnight en-route from Hampshire to Glencoe. I have a small motorhome and it will be just me and my dog. I do not really want to go too far off route so somewhere close to the M6 around or a bit past the Carlisle area. I do not need facilities, just somewhere to walk the dog. Can I stop overnight at a motorway service station and if so do you need to book or just stop and pay or can anyone suggest a place to stop.

Tebay services in Cumbria used to have a small campsite as you drive off the M6 not been that way for a few years so unsure if it’s still there.

I stopped off at Kendal CCC when I did Scotland

Metal Bridge inn pub stop over free if you dine

Have stayed here a few times great food, 5 mins from motorway and right near gretna if you fancy getting married

Stayed at Tebay going north in October. Super convenient adjacent to the service station. You get Tebay’s above average services, takeaway hot pies excellent, plus normal campsite facilities. Fine for overnight but wouldn’t consider longer stays. You book online. Can’t remember cost. They also have overnight parking area on south side.

ASDA have pretty much signed load sof their car parks up for overnighting.
you sign up and them ignore the 2 hour rule. One thing try and find an Asda car park with "islands" you know the walking thingies or whatever so the boy racers dont appear. Can be quite safe if you choose a 24hour open one. 18:30 till 8 am about a fiver

I think Tebay north campsite is £22, including a £3 voucher towards breakfast. Includes Ehu and has a dog walk area with great views.

The Crown Pub Penrith.

AMAZING Thai food (and normal pub fodder).
Free to stay overnight on their car park if you eat/drink inside too.

Old fashioned pub with roaring log fires, dogs welcome inside too. Really nice people, and car park was more than large enough for my 9m MH and a peaceful nights sleep.

I've stopped at Crooklands canal near the Kendal junction on the M6. Fine for an overnight although some people find the traffic noise intrusive ( I didn't) and a pub just up the road.

Smallsite at Gretna green nice fish and chips five mins walk.

Strange... I 100% sure this closed a number of years ago.. Owners were moving there operation else where.
Must have been taken over and reopened.👍👍
EDIT just checked.. yea reopens 1March. Apologies

Brilliant, thanks for all the replies. I have booked the Tebay site. £24 inc EHU

There is a little carpark here that allows overnight parking but no facilities except a bin.

or

https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/marker.php?id=24347 there is a café here for breakfast but the overnight charge has become a bit on the steep side! There are facilities available though.

Metal Bridge but you have to ring ahead for weekends as they get busy, staff very friendly and good food.

The metal bridge inn..,2 rib eyes, 1 shared side , 2 puddings, 2 beers, bottle of red and a safe secure place to stopover including fresh water, elsan point and showers £54 now that’s what I call VFM , and not paying £10 for nothing more than a parking spot.

just looked at that cant see any asdas?

Tebay north bound, you can stay in car park between services and garage or take the road out past Tebay hotel and cross over the M6 now you enter Tebay southbound, here you can park up next to to the pond/dog walking area, in the morning just cross back over to head North on M6, both sides give you £3 voucher towards food, cost last time(AUG 21) was £18 for M'home and £12 for PVC, not cheap but just easy after long day on the road.
