I've used my Kindle paperwhite for years. For reading books it's ideal. Thin, easy to store in the van, you can read it in direct sunlight, free WiFi, stores hundreds of books. Now, because it's more than 10 years old, support is being withdrawn, apparently. It states that from August, store facilities are being withdrawn. What that means I'm not sure. Does that mean store as in file storage, or store as in sales. What happens to my hundreds of books in storage? or is it merely that I can't buy anymore books from them? At least books are books, you can see them in your bookshelf. Technology? Bah, humbug!

You will still be able to use it, but download to a computer or other device and load the files from there..
Should you fill your Kindle up you could also archive your old books on your computer

I had to chuck mine recently, refused to even find the WiFi which was odd.

Got my moneys worth though.

I think you can download everything you have from the Kindle( Amazon) site to a computer, I no longer use my Kindle but use my I pad instead,,

Yes, if you load the Kindle App for Windows for instance, you can at any time, download any book you have bought through your Amazon Kondle account. Once downloaded, you can move it on to an "out of date" Kindle device via a USB cable.

PS In this way, your "outmoded" device will continue to work as normal

It's reading outside in the sunlight where it works for me. My Kindle Fire 8 is rubbish, even with the screen filter. So are my other tablets. Back to books?

A Fire is a tablet not really a Kindle, a proper Kindle is a totally diffent experance and fine in bright sunlight.

Calibre is a good e-book management program, you can download and transfer books to & from your Kindle and its free.

You can also convert books between different e-book formats & from pdf's.

That's why I prefer my paperwhite.

Tried to download the Kindle app for pc earlier today - Amazon comes up with error message 'no stock'???

When Aberdeenshire Libraries closed due to covid I downloaded their app which allows me to still borrow books and read them on my Samsung tablet, the size of screen and brightness can be adjusted to suit. The app that they use is called "Libby" but best to check with your own library service.

I've never used a Kindle so I can't compare.

Yes I use Libby on my I pad. During lockdown it was a real life saver, and money saver. Without it I would have been spending a fortune on kindle books.
biggest problem with Libby, and the electronic library service, is they don’t always have the books you want, they just don’t stock them. so I like to sometimes use my kindle as well, especially i am reading a series of books.

The Paperwhite is a good reading tool as you can read easily in bright sunlight or at night in the dark with no external light.
I think all your books are in your account on Amazon.

Does the paper white only work with Amazon, or Can I download books from, for instance, Libby?

It's a brilliant device that should last many more years. But they are deliberately phasing it out. You could say I've had my value out of it for more than 10 years, so I should be grateful. But this system was aimed at, shall we say, making "solid" books redundant. Technically, it is way behind the latest technology. But it is still doing its job very well. I do dislike this modern, wasteful hi-tech approach. But we are stuck with it.

From reading the article above, it seems you will still be able to use your paper white as a reader, but not access the store from it. Your fire 8 will be able to access the store, then deliver to the paper white. 👍🏻 I hope I have that correct as I too have an excellent paper white and fire tablet. I also use kindle app on iPad for use indoors. Kindle only for outside these days.
